Make sure you have a decent filter in there somewhere or you'll be pumping all sorts of insects and bugs into your engine !

hi adam...yeh got a toyota original ..actually done 500k with it and very little crap in the box..i did drill a fair size hole in the base of the air box in front of the filter to drain any bulk water.I will have to be careful going through deep puddles/ water crossings [i will open the top flap and stick some newspaper in the tube] seems...to have increase in economy and a marked improvement over 80 kph [until it hits the limiter].

looks like an idea mate. did you have some other type of bfi previously done? i note that you have two square holes on the top of the airbox that are later covered. It certainly seems like the way to get a good volume of cooler air in, but most people reckon that the problem is the restrictive size of the pipe and inlet itself. what do you reckon? also how did you make the extra bit?

ben...low speed no difference to the standard bfi mod.{ yes was done]. high speed SEEMS a lot more responsive. it was 'interesting' up to the speed limiter !!!!! i think its a bigger volume than the 'plumbing ' option. the extra bit is made from abs plastic, folded with the heat gun an then welded . it does require a little bending and shaping with the heat gun which was also used for the welding [with the fine tip] i intend to make a mk 2 and will keep a template {neaten it up a bit],i only spent about 1.5 hours on that one .

I like it !! I also like the idea of where the Oil cooler is situated. Is there any sort of fan behind it to keep the airflow when sitting still ??

Michael I just have the pod in the engine bay at the moment but i wanted to move it down like yours. did you manage to get a decent sized pipe from there back? Can you put up some more pics of the setup or pm them to me Thanks

| Paul, I managed to fit a 3" pipe from the pod.
The pipe fits perfectly under the light where the stock snorkel use to be.
And I find this is the best option for air intake as i have tried BFI, and the pod filter up in the engine bay but they didn't work for me. Hope this helps. |

I'll have to pull some bits off to see if i can do the same. I am worried the intercooler pipes on mine will get in the way but you've given me some ideas. thanks for the pics

yeah!!! Ty I bought all my things from not so cheap supercheap . A universal pod and the rest is calibre stuff. And yes i noticed a big difference at low, mid, and high speeds. I highly recommend you do something like this.

It looks good hey. I used to have a similar setup in my old Nissan Pulsar ET Turbo and it also worked a charm. Almost sucked in birds and small childeren hahah As for the rain - i never had any dramas with mine but i never really drove like an idiot in the rain or drove through large puddles. If you drive carefully i reckon you should be right. The air doesnt get much colder than there when driving hey !?

Adrain Parsons - I don't seem to have any problems with the pod getting wet. And there was know trouble refitting the light. As you can see in the pic its a perfect fit. James, yeah, you cant get much colder air than the location it is in now.

My mate has a 180sx with filter down low like that. Lets just say, it's been a long and expensive re-build... Don't know what sort of puddle or lake he ran into to cause such damage though.

| I made the sealed airbox below a couple of days ago out of clear perspex then painted it black. Inside is a K&NB type pod filter. Total cost $26

What about something in between like running a three inch snorkel to the standard airbox. Basically combining Michaels idea with a bfi.
