I get this loud noise from the engine/serpentine belt area.

Took it to SL, Doug replaced the tension pulley, but that didnt fix the noise.

Doug reckons its the alternator that makes the noise, and that it needs to be replaced.

They are $300 second hand, $400 for a reconditioned one.

Can I use an alternator from a different car that would fit straight in?
I really dont want to spend $300.

Or could the ticking/cracked ballbearing noise come from something else?

Have you had this happening to you before?

Seal kit (without bearing) is approx $50, bearing is available from any bearing shop.

Sorry Peter,

Seal kit for the alternator?

And where do you get the kit from?

Whoops, I was thinking P/S pump which is what usually kills the alternator when it leaks.

D'oh... Sorry :-)

Is $400 too much for a reconditioned alternator?

I checked and it looks like Ingram are selling them for $425 brand new.

I also found on ebay this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LEXUS-ES250-TOYOTA-CAMRY-BOSCH-ALTERNATOR_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ 33573QQitemZ8024470749QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD2V

Looks like a Camry equivalent of a 250 Lexus. Are there any that would suit for the 400?

Also some was saying the follwing, can anyone confirm this:

http://soarercentral.com/alsc-forum/messages/4/1917.html

and this:

"Well I finally fixed the dreaded leaking power steering pump and stuffed alternator. I'll give you all some more de3tails when I have time. Basically I just bought a P/S rebuild kit from Brighton lexus for $49 (less at Melb city) and new Bearings from SKF bearings for $22. The hardest bit was the alternator. In the end I found out the rotor was the same as the landcruiser 100series V8. I found a great place who rebuild the rotors. Cost me $75 changeover on a rotor. I then got the new bearings (a little bit harder to get as they are japanese specials) from the Bearing Warehouse for $20. I was going to replace the brushes but got the wrong ones and basiclly needed it fixed by the weekend. The old ones looked ok. Anyway, all fixed and back on the road for less than $200! I'll post all the part no. etc later as it should save you some time. Hope I can help you guys as I found it hard to gather the info."

Thanks
