The train is called the Indian Pacific and I think you would pick it up at Adelaide. If you were going from Melbourne you need to take the Overland to get to Adelaide. It would have to be cheaper to have it back loaded from perth east you've just got to find a transport company that is looking for back loads.

Alfred; mate if you have the car on a permit you may have to get one for SA and Vic if comming from wa to vic i know that you can drive from vic into sa and it is OK you can drive from vic to qld on a permit BUT you must have another one approved by NSW to drive through to get to QLD. normal reg from each stste is ok to drive any were Fuel bill on one trip over to Kal. i remember i got from melbourne to adelaide on $25 and the v8 i was driving then i had a 6X4 trailer on the back and in the trailer i had a 44 gallon drum which i filled in adelaide around $125 from memory to fill it. that drum was plumbed into the filler neck of the cars tank through a small pump and shut off valve and i could feed the cars tank while driving along so i didn't have to stop till norseman then another 4 hrs to kal and this was back in 1985 the
