has anyone heard of the brand of motor oil called 'motul'? because apparantly its one of the very best, and the guy said that shell helix is just an ordinary oil. he said motul is what they use in the super bikes and is recommended by porsche, bmw, and subaru.

Motul is French. My Peugeot (407) has Motul recommended stickers in the engine bay and the handbook recommends it. My Peugeot dealer, however, puts in Mobil 1 and I use Castrol Magnatec in my Soarer. I have been happy with both, so I guess its really up to the individual as to what brand you use.

There have been a number threads on here about oil and Peter Scott has a very good oil brands review on Planet Soarer.

And Shell helix is recommended by Ferrari. It basically all comes down to 'sponsorship', what oil company will give me what incentive to recommend that it be put in the car that I build?

Neil has recommended to me that I use Penrite semi-synthetic in my tt. I have been for the last 2 years and I'm more than happy with it, engine runs way better than it did on Castrol. Everyone seems to take Neil's word as gospel on everything except oil, why is that?

Oh yeah, and it's only $28 a bottle too! Motul does have its good points, my brother in-law uses Motul in the drag cars that he builds and says that it is great in them, but the $100+ per bottle price tag isn't justified on a street car unless it is MAJORLY modified.

semi-synthetic in a TT, does that cause any problems I know they work great in NA's as that is what I used in the camry

I have read on many forums and I have been recommended by my mechanic to use full synthetic is there any problems if you dont run a full synthetic

if I works well I might give it a try too

Motul turbolight 10-40w is good stuff for the price. Its semi-synthetic though.

If youve got 90 bucks, grab some mobil 1 10-30w and be done with it.

If you read the back of the bottle on most fully synthetic oils, it actually recommends NOT putting it in an older engine, ie anything over 100,000km. Now seeing that I'm pushing 200,000km at the moment, if I ran fully synthetic oil, it would have all leaked out before I finished pouring it in!!! As I said before, if Neil has recommended it, how bad can it be?!?

If you've got leaky/worn turbos, a thin synthetic oil will kill them in a few weeks. Seen it happen time and time again.

Best oil ive used so far is the turbolight 10-40w, engine is singing happy happy joy joy.

Personally reckon you can't go past mobil 1 synthetic, there is a post around here on motor oil comparisons too, Mobil 1 came out on top.

I've used $11 for 6L Sprint Auto home brand oil in the soarer before. That was only in there for 1/2 hr though, and for the sole purpose of flushing the crap out of my engine that the previous owner had let accumulate. Came out darker than the ace of spades whilst being shaded by the black hole of Calcutta. Nice new previously mentioned oil went in after that, 3500km later and it is still a goldish colour!

castrol edge all the way (10w something) Expensive but good! was running shell helix ultra(5w 30), but was a touch too thin.

Plus castrol edge is ran in alot of top drag cars (victor + ben bray's cars)

Engine has never ran better!

I used some Castrol Magnatec stuff.

I've run that in my bike, as well as the Celica (with an mr2 engine) and the Soarer.

No probs for me as yet. I guess time will tell.
