I was offered $10500 for my 91 UZZ31 V8 ltd as trade in (thought it was a good offer). hence, $10500+6000=$16500 on the road. I drove it and it was nice, clean & quite. But if Cihan has good reasons behind his assumption, i need to think about it.

I'm pretty sure Cihan spotted (what looks to be) the repainted engine bay.

Original top tanks are black, and have toyota writing in white stamped on in the middle. The cars not at 70,000kms unless the top tank failed prematurely. Check if the radiator hose has been replaced as the hot radiator fluid spills all over the hose when the top tanks cracks and cooks it leaving obvious marks. If thats the case, they would have renewed the hose. That engine bay looks like its been resprayed... Pretty obvious dont you say? Its a blue/purple colour for a silver car? But if you like it, buy it buddy. Dealers are dodgey in every respect, so dont believe anything you cannot confirm. Naphtali, what ricer boy likes baby poo brown? The top tank itself is seperate from the black parts, they cover it once its attached to the radiator.

My soarer only has 75,000km's and I need to replace the top tank of it and as for the engine bay, it might look bluish cause of the camera.. or for the simple fact it hasn't got clear coat. Most silver soarers i've seen have a small blue tinge to them.

Ben, i really dont want to start a useless argument with everyone in the same boat.. but, top tanks have a life expectancy and cars that have them blowing early either different dashes installed or have had the original top tank fail prematurely. Just like there is an accepted kays limit for when the head gasket of an EF/EL falcon should blow under normal conditions, or start to fail (~140,000kms) there is an accepted life expectancy for a soarer top tank. If its not original there is a good chance the cars kays aren't either, unless of course the kays agree with the top tank. You can tell on a TT by looking at the 2.75" induction pipe on the throttle body, if the top tank has blown there's a good chance it will have boil marks on it. The top tank tends to blow and spill hot coolant all over the front of the engine bay. Its just one of the things you can use to gauge the cars kays. Timing belt stickers, water pumps etc all can help put the pieces together and help you work out whether the car really has the kays they're quoting since the dash reading carries little weight in making the decision. By all means Khan, get the car checked out by a good mechanic and buy it if everything is prim proper and straight. Doesnt really matter if its had a respray if its been done properly. Just make sure you know why it was necessary and whether there was any chassis damage. With such topics everyone gets defensive.. but thats the nature of the game and im just trying to do my bit and see that he doesnt buy a lemon the dealer has touched up and disguised in cream with a cherry on top. By all means disregard my reasoning and think what you want, im just running my mouth for the best interests of another SC member.

No probs. How does this one drive? Does it have the exhaust manifold shielding? The first one with a suspected respray didnt. My friends JZZ31 has original shielding over the exhaust manifold, off memory its a 94' model.

I was told that after 1996 all 2.5 ltr is single turbo, there is no factory TT after 96. Is it right?

Khan, thats right, single turbo with VVT from 8/'96 on. From what I've read its a better setup than the TT/non VVT anyway, at least for daily driving, more low down torque.

Must clarify, but the original top tanks on the later models (who knows why) are that colour that is posted from the silver 3ltr.

Khan, its highly unlikely that both those cars have resprayed engine bays. I rekon your camera's having a hard time with the silver and its looking very purple when compressed. Just go out and buy what you feel drives right. Make sure its straight, and mechanically sound. Thats all you have to worry about really, the rest is all opinionative decision making. Not much chance we can help you without seeing the car for our selves buddy. Good luck, and sorry if i've caused any confusion regarding the 'resprayed engine bay'. It definitely looked weired to me, and still does! If the top tanks come in that colour then look for white writing with 'TOYOTA' stamped on it, most aftermarket tanks are not toyota original (because OEM stuff is expensive) and are missing the stamp.

I agree with what Cihan says Kahn, but if I was pressed, I'd opt for the VVTi model, as it APPEARS (from the photo) to be in original condition (as does the older one), but I would strongly suggest that you contact one of the more knowledgeable Melbourne members, and if they are willing & able to look at a car for/with you, that would be the ideal solution

Just to add to the confusion, my late '96 VVTi single turbo has the same colour rad tank as Khan showed us in the 2JZ he was looking at.... as someone suggested, maybe MR T changed over in the late '96 period to a sort of poopy, not quite baby s**t brown, almost khaki, but definitely NOT attractive colour (I prefer black plastic myself, pls don't construe that as an invitation to vinyl parties or anything similar)

Hey guys, thanks for all the great tips. pretty much decided to buy the 97 3ltr non turbo. But i will have an inspection done by S&L Cars in Melbourne before purchasing to find any major issues. As i have said before, its stock with no electric seat, no spoiler, no sub woofer, no woodtrim. I believe aftermarket woodtrim would be easy to get. I have offered my 91 V8 LTD+$5000 (dealer asking my V8+$6500) on the road. I guess if i can get in this price, would be a good deal. What you recon?
