| Almost forgot these ones!

It depends on how into photography you are mate. If you're after something to take a better than average pic with, then the 350 will be ok. If you have any inclination to use it for pro work, then you'll kick yourself down the track if you get anything less than the 20/30d. Then again, if you start going pro too, then you'll have me to deal with... |

yeah I'm not looking to go pro, and if I did I'd buy a new one anyway way. I just want something for when I go on holidays that takes good pics.

Ashley, if you are going on holiday you want something small and compact moreso than a full on SLR, you get sick of carrying it around quickly. As I've said I've got the 350D but if I went away overseas I would look to buy something that could fit in my pocket to make it easier. That said I took my camera to Melbourne recently and lugged it around and it wasn't *too* bad but still got a bit annoying.

Yeah I'm thinking about going to Japan and really want some good shots though, also be good for anything that I need to do hom as well. I've got a Pentax S5n, it's pretty good. 5MP and the like. So that's my portable camera

Then I think what you are looking at will do a pretty good job and with 28-300mm is very flexible. Remember that you will need the tripod or to lean on something with the long lens unless you are taking very fast shots. The one bit of kit there that I would actively oppose for most usage is the 4GB microdrive. Yes, hard disks are highly reliable but memory cards are even more so. A microdrive is going to hold every one of your shots on a trip so if it crashes you have only If you are downloading the shots to something else then you do not need that capacity anyway, plus it will soak more power from your camera (and make noise) compared with cards. On a trip I am sufficiently paranoid that I use multiple memory cards of only 0.5GB each (two usually suffice) being unwilling to risk more than 100 shots onto a single item and backing it up anyway (an iPod does that nicely) when I take it out of the camera. That way I can store shots in two different places in case of loss or theft as well as having a backup against electronic failure.

Hmmm good point, I might give the Microdrive a miss.

Handy for backing up critical files on a portable though. I use one for that. Actually, I originally bought it ahead of a planned camera purchase but changed my mind about the camera and by the time I bought the 20D I had thought better of the microdrive.

A 350D it is for me. That pack looks ok, although I'll probably just get the base camera first and then some lenses later.

Ben, your pics are great, I'm just trying to sort out how I can get such awesomness as well. I think I found a base 350D (with the 18-55mm lens)on Ebay for about $930AU. Which is pretty good. I'd really like the pack, but I can't afford that much, plus for tons of stuff I don't need.

Did you get a good price? I can't seem to find a twin lens kit one on ebay and they are too expensive at the camera store.

I purchased it locally - I did get a good deal - got it though my bro's work + 5 additional years warranty, so i can feel pretty safe if it decides to play up during that time im covered - they also have a deal going at the moment with Canon - $100 cash back. I was thinking of buying from ebay but then i thought might as well pay the extra $100 or so - for warranty purposes and also claim it back on tax. as a majority of the cheaper 350D's come from HK. The guys on ebay claim to provide warranty as well - but you need to send your camera back overseas. It wont be covered under local warranty if you buy overseas - and i think it will be a hassle if anything goes wrong with the camera - as you need to send back then wait etc... and dont know how much shipping charges you will be hit with etc...

Pics, Ben? Oh, those pics! Umm, yes, not bad. Not bad at all. Well, a load better than mine but what has that got to do with it? Some of my (non-action) shots have already been scattered around here but the resolution is too restricted. See a couple of cat photos, IS300, my profile etc. I also put up shots of the Easter cruise. |

If you are buying Canon, allow me to recommend this site: http://www.qualitycamera.com.au/ At worst they provide a benchmark for negotiation with others, but you get Australian warranty and the bloke is both knowledgeable and helpful over the phone as well as delivering promptly.

Just had a look at your profile pic mate, what's going on there, you're car going through the escape and evade course? Hehehe, nothing like a camoflauged soarer, just the ticket to sneak up on those unsuspecting skylines!

We should stick a soarer in a bush and cover it with my cammo net. Then when people walk past we could rev it up and scare the daylights outta them!
