The Celica I wouldn't have a clue, but since the mid~late 90's model runs the same motor as a Camry 4-banger I'd probably base it around that.
98RON fuel is Soarer food so give it what it needs and nothing less. Currently I'm paying about 119.9c/L for BP Ultimate (or thereabouts) and I'm usually down to around 1/4 full if not a little less every week (and it's a 78 litre tank).

James, if the cost of fuel is the defining factor between what you get then go the Celica. The Soarer will cost you more and is probably more difficult to fix when something goes wrong.

if any here is a 'top gear' freak like i am
the Prius isn't all whats its mean to be yes it is more efficient and cheaper to run then most petrol cars of it's size, but a small diesel powered car is by far more economical to run.

If you drive it with your foot flat everywhere its gonna be an assey car on fuel, no doubt. The same goes for all cars.
James, you dont save enough on fuel with the Soarer to make up the that you have to fix.. -.-'' I have a service history as long as me since Sept last year =P

toyta four cylinders formt he 90's such as teh 3sge and 3sfe and early this century are actually a little bit dirty, and arent that efficient. There actually isnt a hole lot of difference (going by experience havign owned a couple of camrys, auto and a manual)in fuel consumption at the end of the day.
I mean really, 4 cylinder camry chewing over 10l/100 (auto) or a LUXURY LINER SOARER using a bees dick over 11L/100km. For the record, my BA Falcon sucks 12.6l/100km @ the moment (auto)
One billion zillion times easier to work on the soarer, panels are dirt cheap and theres a good supply of parts available.
Considering where you live, you wont have the aircon tunning 100% of the time, the figures may be less, may be not.

Ok, so I don't own a 6 cylinder, but my fuel consumption figures for my last fill were 645 km for 73 litres of BP Ultimate ($115.9 at last fill). That's 11.3 l/100km which isn't too shabby for an eight. One third of that was on the highway, lugging 3 and a half people and gear around, while the rest was stop/start with a bit of a hill run thrown in for good measure.
If you can halve that fuel consumption and still enjoy driving your economy box in city traffic, or on a weekend hill run as much as I do, then please let me know.

james i own a 1987 celica and i pull about 450-500km out of it with 350,000km on the clock and to fill up a full tank at high petrol prices it costs me about $50. but you cant really compare a soarer and a celica, they are two different cars. if you want looks and speed go for the soarer, but if petrol is your number one factor, go for the celica. i pull upto 500km with my TT at $70-$80. but you wont regret it if you get a soarer, you will forget about petrol costs once you sit in a soarer. thats my opinion.

i have had my soarer three weeks now. I came from a holden barina. I love the soarer so much i have forgotten to care bout fuel costs. i am paying 80 to fill up and get 600km after a lot of hard accelerating, (the second week was test week )

I have both an 86 Celica and a 91 Soarer TT.
Celica awsome to work on, fun to drive and light weight. However it isnt in the same class as the Soarer. Celica has a 50 liter tank and averages around 10.5 liters per 100Kms around town. With some heavy acceleration etc. Soarer has an 80 liter tank asnd averages around 13 liters I think.
Both use premium as in the Celica I have an MR2 engine (3sge) same engine as standard but beause its using the old ECU it will ping if I dont use high octane.
I drive my Soarer daily but I love both cars.
My missus has a SV21 Camry, which has the 3sFe engine , 88kW vs my 120Kw or so however she gets great economy. Under 10 per 100 around town.
The 1990+ model celicas have a 5sfe engine, its basically the economy head with a 2.2 liter instead of a 2 liter. They can go alright and have fairly good torque but little pull in the higher revs.
If money is an issue and you are worried about fuel prices, Soarer isnt for you!
As I live 5 Kms from work, fuel isnt much of an issue for me either but if I worked over the other side of the city, then things might be different.

I think mine snorts 11L just to wake up in the morning let alone getting 100Ks on it hehe.
I'm trying REALLY hard to keep my right foot away from the firewall at the moment. Trying to ascertain just how miserly it can be, but its a bloody struggle I tells ya!
Normally I'll get 500klms IF I'M LUCKY out of a tank of BP Ultimate.
And shes a stocker!
Apexi NEO sitting here waiting to be installed next service. Will be interesting to see what difference that makes to performance/economy.

My ST184 Celica was brilliant on fuel! About 8L/100 round town (not booting it everywhere) My co-pilot was getting around 6.5L/100, but i was only getting 7.5/100 on the drive across the Nullaboor, Granted I was pretty much low flying...
As for the Soarer, if I drive her really nicely I get about 10L/100 and about 15L/100 the way I normally drive
