Well Ive been meaning to post this up for a while, heres a video of my Digital dash at a night time Drag racing event... Here I ran 15.4 @ 91mph. First Run ever on the strip, cold 205 tires, only has a 1/2 complete BFI, lots of junk in the car, got an average start but I was more than happy! Enough Waffle - Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcJ_NJmWv70

Oh gosh silly me.... I think since I own a soarer which is classed by some to be an 'old mans car' my minds going along that forgetful path... Anyway its nice to watch again! Not every day you see a snoarer going 100mph

However theres one thing we can discuss! If you noticed between 140-150km/h theres sort of back off in speed. You can hear it quite clearly. I can quite remember but I think its a tiny hump towards the end of the drag strip so you lose a bit of momentum... Either that or perhaps a little glitch with my cars fuel or ignition system not working 100% at that speed... Any ideas?

Nah, not off the top of me head...... The car sounds crisp & strong, so I suspect it's the hump in the track. You may have found with repeated runs that the ECU would retain a more aggressive setting.....if ya know what I mean

That Thing that sounds like a flat spot around 140km/h is the Lock Up in the auto gearbox. Common on all soarers.

Hmm is that right.... What exactly is the cause of this? or why does it do that?

Locks up the Convertor or clutches ( people have different views) so 100% power is transferred to the ground. No torque convertor slippage. Helps push along a bit harder.

Oh good. For some reason I though it could have been a electrical problem where a plug missed a spark or something odd like that.. Hehe Thanks for confirming its a common function Dan

If it is locking up the converter under full throttle, then you need a way to trick the thing so it doesn't. You could try making the brake light switch come on (tape it down or bridge the wires or something, you'll work it out!!). That way, it shouldn't lock it up. Then your car should keep going, without that hesitation. For 1/4 mile use only ofcause!!

I did a little testing this afternoon and the converter locks up (WHICH IS FKN MAD CORE!) EARLIER when on 'ECT Normal' at WOT and it locks up later when in 'ECT PWR' at WOT. PS - Lock up FTW. |

Agree, my experience is that it gives the car a slight extra shove as it locks, not a loss of thrust. Engine is doing whatever RPM, lock kicks in a bit like a fast gear change, the engine to wheel ratio drops (or the other way depending how you look at it) so suddenly a bit more thrust to the wheels. It doesn't seem to ease off the engine like a gear change does.

Pen, when I got my shift kit done 15 months ago the workshop disabled my lock up. I hadn't had the car for very long and didn't know until recently that it even existed or what it did. It killed my fuel economy, created more heat, made the car less smooth/comfortable to drive and took a decent chunk of power out too! hehe Got my auto serviced and it locked up last week and WOW! Lock up rules! That is all.

I would just be a bit worried about the longevity of the lock up clutch, with it engaging at full throttle at high revs. You certainly wouldn't want to stop it working permanently. I suppose it locks at that point as there shouldn't be as much converter slip at higher revs, but still!!

Graham, It actually makes the car accelrate faster an dacheive faster 1/4 mile times. When my car had 180rwkw it ran a best of 13.7 @ 103mph without Lockup.. WITH the lockup it ran 13.4@105mph. Does make a difference. Also, Cant wait to see what Ben gets with his box able to lock up now. On his street slicks im thinking he will knock it into the 11's no probs. And i second what maurice has said. LOCKUP FTW~!

I have never had my torque converter lockup down the quarter... By design as well, i thought it wasn't supposed to lockup under ANY acceleration? Let alone WOT down the strip o.O Playing around with the way the electronics work as well i have found that lockup will not occur with the ECT in power mode. *Shrugs* Im told by some auto transmission mechanic lockup is also known to kill auto boxes. (Not specifically Soarers, however i dont think the theory would disclude the magical Toyota auto transmission!)

It does lock up Callum. Try going along in 4th at 60kph with ECT Normal then flick over to power, it doesn't unlock it, it stays locked. |

Not from what i have experienced; it always unlocks it immediately! |

Mine is the same as Callums. It unlocks as soon as I switch to PWR, at 60 or 70. I have an RSM on my dash, and can monitor even the smallest change in rpm. I think it locks up at higher speeds, but would have to test to be sure!!

Someone test it for me I have my lockup on a switch that I can activate. I haven't tried using it at the strip yet as I have been a little preoccupied pointing straight at 190kms I didn't want to try it as I know that Shane's cressida fried the lockup clutch and had a bigger one put in but I suppose doing it with much less power shouldn't be "that" bad.

I think its silly to f**k around with the torque converter too much, as the factory design will unlock them if you change the throttle when cruising.. surely that says something about what they are used for!
