I've been reading up on chips lately. I hear the weakest part of the 1UZ is the chip, as it's been so conservatively tuned.
When i used to own the NA Supra I heard the AFC NEO's were not a bad little mod, a mate managed to achieve 150rwkw with headers, exhaust and a NEO. Not bad for the 2JZ-GE.. I've no idea what my 1UZ's making at the moment - with just the catback 2.25inch exhaust done. http://www.modyourcar.com.au/apexi-afcneo-p5022
$800 or so, then you need to install & tune it..Would it be beneficial - tt or v8 owners, has anyone had experience with these?
I've also read about the Xede chip here, which is well worth a read. Claiming 175rwkw with a good exhaust, slightly revised intake (k&n panel filter) No aftermarket headers - so still more power to be made. With stock ecu apparently 149rwkw however again pricey at $1600
What about the Emanage Blue? is it comparable to some of the other chips (I've also heard it's quite good)
Realistically I'm not looking to spend this kind of cash. Other areas of my car need attention first before I start thinking about computers for the 1UZ. Just interested what peoples opinions are and what the best bang for buck is, after they've done their exhaust, & BFI to the 1UZ

Daniel, I hate to argue this point but there has only ever been one 1uz with such a result and it clearly had problems running stupidly rich and was down on power compared with what is should have been.
Don't waste your time with a SAFC or uni chip. SAFC will achieve stuff all improvement and the Uni chip is stupidly expensive they fail and can only be tuned by very few people which is very limited.
Same with the Xede chip very expensive and there is no additional gain over SMT6 or EMB.
If you want a piggy back i would strongly suggest SMT6, EMB or EMU.
SMT6 is cheap and easy to install, easy to use and works.
EMB had nothing extra over the SMT6 but is a little more readily available but it will cost you a little more. Getting it going will not be as simple as the SMT6 but it can be done.
EMU slightly better as it can allow for more timing adjustment but unless you have some fairly serious mods I doubt you will need the extra range.
Alternatively there is the full ECU's I think the Wolf V500 plug in ECU (direct replacement) is the way to go. The 18 year old factory ECU isn't required at all unlike most full ECU systems the factory ECU remains to run the auto.
Most full ECU's will allows for full range of control and will enable the most performance gain.

A second hand ultimate is the way to go for the 1UZ. Use TPS vs RPM for tuning and leave the AFM untouched.
Drives like a different engine, seriously big difference to throttle response and low end torque when tuned properly. Light cruise takes the timing and fuel economy improves notably.
They also pick up about 12-15rwkw peak power in my experience. Stalling up second gear i measured a torque increase of %15 with the converter flaring on the dyno, with on the spot changes to timing and fuel. Really helps the heavy soarer get off the line.
BTW Both emanage blue and ultimate have the same timing adjustment range (+-20 degrees). They don't alter the crank / cam sensor signals like the SMT6.

Cool, thanks Cihan, good to hear your opinions.
What about the E Manage blue - reason I ask is because I'm considering one at the moment. Have you installed an EMB on the 1UZ & are they little more difficult to get setup. Also, I heard that the EMB damages some cars coil packs, any truth to this

I agree with the comments about the SAFC but just to add a couple of things-
* You should not be paying anything like $800 for one, i got mine brand new from Greenline for less than half of that
* If you have a '94+ V8 it may not work anyway - mine didnt and that was after triple-checking teh wiring and two different workshops trying to tune it
I then stuck it in my 1991 V8 and it worked fine, but the point remains they are not really a good solution for power from the eight

Sean, very interested to hear how you go with anything for 94' plus as I'm still looking to do mine with something. Couldn't get anyone to commit to fitting the SMT6 and that is why I sold it. Now after seeing the feedback here, I'm not sure I want to go for the Unichip either.

SMT6 provides -8 and about +13-14 deg of timing.
SMT6 has more than enough fuel and timing range adjustment for a stock car and will suit the majority of modified cars still running stock injectors.
There is plenty of documentation and wiring diagrams to get the SMT6 working and they can be installed and up and running in about 2hrs with very very simple wiring.
They have proven to be reliable and they are cost effective. Yes Mike they do work on the 94+ soarers.
I am not saying the EMB or EMU are not good units they are and for a TT they are certainly the way to go. But the extra cost additional complication of installation with no real world performance benefit (unless you need the additional timing range (not required for most applications)) I would just use the SMT6.

i had a smt-6 in my old car.... ultimately it was also what caused it to die, it wasnt the smt's fault
it's a great lil comp, cheap as chips and easy to setup and tune, i got much larger gains using that as did the same set up as mine but on a unichip
can the smt6 be used on a stock V8? i was going to get a unichip but they have bugger all dealers here and the smt dude is around the corner and knows his jap imports

Damien, I had an SMT6 and couldn't get anyone to fit it on my late model. They were all bamboozled because of the different plugs. I never did have any doubts it would work fine, it was just getting someone to commit to fitting the bloody thing. There's a guy in Caboolture who would fit a unichip for $1500.00 but I keep trying to get him to get back to me so as to book in but can't get a response. So much for the recession eh? So now I'm thinking if I could find anyone to fit an alternative, I'll go with that.

apparently was the factor in my engines death, something to do with not having enough resolution blah blah blah, it was a n/a engine that was s/c'd running 6psi boost went from 105awkw to 180awkw on just 6.47psi long story short is that even with the safe tune the 1 in a thousand scenario happened, but what do you expect from a $500 computer a $2500 aftermarket ecu maybe would have had a different outcome, but no biggie... engines are cheap (i mean that seriously $900 later for a low km unit fitted! and it was on the road again and with 40k less on the engine than before)
the smt is also able to run other things like extra injector (as in my case, for extra fuelling and to seal the blower) or water injection etc...

Running extra injectors is so 1980's , and was the reason for alot of engine failures . Fitting larger injectors is the proper way to go though Andrew.

Xtra injector was needed for sealing the blower, were talking twin screw opcon not an eaton, the xtra inj helps with the sealing the blower as it's the type that has internal compression again unlike an eaton. But instead of extra injector, water spray would do the same thing. The engine already had appropriate injectors
