Ok so do any other factory manual owners have this problem?

When it's under load and I rev 3rd out to about 5k, go to grab 4th @ about 80-80km and it misses the gear...and I gotta pump the clutch a little to get it to slip in. Not good because it costs me valuable seconds. It doesn't do it all the time, just when I take it for a hurt. Is anyone else feeling my pain or am I just special?

Sam, I've got an auto, so I can't answer the first question, but as for the second, yes, you are special.....

What transmission fluid is your 5 speed gearbox using?
Is your clutch pedal pickup point normal?

Could be a worn clutch? Question would be better asked in the mechanical section me thinks.

Search the forums first though. =)

5000rpm in 3rd is actually about 113km/hr in a factory 5 speed Soarer with redline about 170km/hr whereas 5000rpm in 2nd is about 75km/hr with redline about 113km/hr...

Sam, i must say that i have never experienced that problem. the only problem i experience is occasinally getting into 1st gear early in the morning, i have to go to second then back to first. saying this all manual cars that i have owned have had this problem.

I do not have the issue either Sam and I have mistreated mine in all changes except into 5th.
The only issue I have is the synchro must be worn into second as when I race that change I can feel the cogs grate slightly. ( never did this when I bought it.) I am using redline light weight shock proof in the box.

as i said before sam, i'm thinking maybe bleed the clutch, just to make sure you're getting the slave cylinder to push 100% - it may be getting just enough movement to not bother you on every other change.

does this sound feasible neil?? otherwise possible worn/slightly malaligned synchro on 4th (as to why/how that happens - i have no idea??)

Yeah all good ideas, thanks everyone. Clutch pick up point seems fine and I'm not too sure about transmission fluid (I'll look into it).

This is just a guestimation as most of the time I either watching the road or cursing my at my shifter.
Daniel I have the same problem as you with 1st gear, and often with reverse too.

Sam clutch bleeding is easy, you could bring your car round to chooks place on Saturday when I help him change his oil

-- EDIT --
hmmm forgot I don't have spanners, haven't purchased those yet since I lost easy access to Dads kit, got socket set last weekend, next purchace is a spanner set then methinks

Sounds like worn synchro to me, but definitely worth bleeding the clutch and oil change first.

tom - where are you buying your redline (pictured) from?? are you getting it from West Racing? Roughly how much??

i'm just finishing off a manual conversion, so i'm going to be in need of some good tranny oil in a week or two.

No, not experiencing that problem and i use Redline. Not that Redline is necessarily the answer.
I do find 2nd a lil hard to get into if I give it 7,000rpm flat to floor in 1st gear, but i expect this is a minor timing / technique issue under hard acceleration.

Shane, The local Auto 1 in Morley is where I got mine. This oil was recommended if you tend to be harsh on the box from time to time. Pricing $34.00 for .946 litres, The original 3.97 litre container cost me around $120 18 months ago.

Main site for tech info

Resellers.

Incidently the diff oil in the background was $30 for 1 us quart/0.946 litres and was a good 10 to 15 dollars cheaper than the castrol oil mentioned in a diff thread on the forum, which surprised me.
