hey guys, i recently got my first soarer and couldn't be more pleased.
its a 1993 4.0L Gt.
and i was just wondering about some of the materials that are recommended for this kind of car.
such things as: - what engine oil? - brand and octane level of petrol? (the dealer says i only need to run premium through it once every 4 tanks) - how many km's for a full tank should i be getting? - good places in Melbourne to get it serviced.
sorry if i sound a little lost about these things, but ive wanted a soarer for so long and i wanna make sure i maintain it.

1) A good quality mineral oil 2) 98 octane 3) It's a V8, don't worry about that!! 4) Our sponsor http://www.sportsluxurycars.com.au/ Good choice of car. Enjoy.

1) semi synthetic 10w-50 (I use Penrite) 2) any premium, 98 octane is best, BP, Mobil or optimax, the dealer is an idiot, use premium all the time. 3)I get 350kms, driving in and around the city, but thats as bad as it gets, some guys get up to 600. but yeah likeGraham said, its not an economical car 4)Sports and Luxury Cars.. for important stuff. Learn to do simple maintenance like oil etc yourself, or use any mechanic
All the best, Its a very rewarding car to own if you look after it

wow, thnx for that insight. another thing i was wondering if you guy could shed some light on is... when i start the gar, it is extreamly quite, even for a v8. the car is stock mechanically with original exhaust and mufflers. but i just dont get the 'v8 grunt' noise when i start it? the performance is not an issue as i had a few street drags already with my friends 4th and 5th gen preludes.
what would you guys recommend? what is the maximum and minimum price i would be looking at to get a nice grunt out of the exhaust?

Welcome to SC
There has been a fair bit of discussions on exhausts recently, browse the Mechanical section or use Search. In fact all of these points have been well covered.
We hope you appreciate all the assistance available here, in turn we appreciate if you at least have a look around and then ask questions that you can't find the answers to.

Hi Matthew, and to the ALSC.
We have the same model as you (UZZ30), and we use 10 liters per 100kms on the open road, and in our case a tankfull (78L) lasts us a month, which is using it every day for work, and occasional weekend putting around. I can only get 96 petrol in our city, and the car runs VERY well on that, BUT IF we had 98 available you can be assured that I would be using it, as our cars (V8's & TT's anyway) like the Hi-octane fuel, and then I would THEN expect to be using 8-9 liters per 100kms.
The oil I use is Castrol Magnatec, and it works fine with NO problems.
Also, use ONLY genuine Toyota oil filters, they are FAR superior to ANY aftermarket filter.

Also, to add some more to that...
ONLY USE TOYOTA RED COOLANT. If you use anything else you are risking major(read expensive!!) engine damage. If you don't have that in there now, get whatever is in there out and put the good stuff in.

I do the same as what Matthew does . If traffic flow could reliably stay at a steady 50 - 60kph, then I'd leave the O/D ON, but with the wally & wallyesses who insist in driving at 38kph, then up to the giddy heights of 48kph, I prefer the added engine braking effect that is to be had from leaving O/D OFF.

I mostly have it ON, even at low speeds in the city. I use the O/D button for engine breaking.
Expect 6-8km/l in city driving on a stock standard V8.
To change the exhaust note, fit new exhaust. Fit Neil's headers at the same time as you will be doing it later anyway. Full system, including setup can probably be done for $1500-$2000 if you don't require a stainless steel exhaust.
There's a couple of basic mods you can do to make the car run and respond better. Do a search on BFI and Unichip and you'll see all. It's all dependent on the size of your wallet and your personal preferences.

Welcome Matthew. I have done the cheap things like BFI, changed my plugs, reset ECU, changed exhaust from CAT back for some improvement in performance and fuel economy. The real differences will be in the headers and a unichip or similar. From there it's serious mods and serious money. I'll definitely be doing the unichip but not the headers as I don't want to risk having a too noisy exhaust.
