Seen a few TT with TEMS for sale. One of the soarers is 1991 and has 160kms on the clock. So just wondering would i be ok and have trouble free tems struts at these highish kms?

When do the struts usually wear out and leak?

Also what is TEMS like.. does it do much? Is it worth having?

And any one replaced the tems struts with coils.. if so what approximate cost was it?

TEMS on a TT is not the air-bag TEMS on a V8. The TT TEMS is just an adjustable valve to alter the stiffness of the shocker, so the TEMS component shouldn't be much of a maintenance issue by itself.

As to the rest of the shocker, no idea :-)

They wear out like shocks do. Nothing special that I have heard or read about. How much influence TEMS has on a TT had better be answered by a TT owner. Note what Pen said though: TEMS and air struts are unrelated items, even though buying new air struts gets you new TEMS shocks on a '31.

Hello,
I have a 95 TT with tems, and after 135,000km, it is still working fine for me, when i flick the pwr button, the front struts are noticibly stiffened to allow a more even ride around corners and provides staunch highway pwnage..

Just try it out, without tems on.. the car is very forgiving over bumps.. and on corners, you notice the weight of the car more and u feel a little unsafe aahah...

tems is good.. you should notice the difference..

Another thing to keep in mind is that tems is a GT TL standard feature, if you choose a car without tems, you'll also be missing out on ABS, elec seats, LCD mirror, premium sound ect ect...

Personally, I don't think I can notice a difference with tems on / off on my TT.

Well ive always wanted the GT-TL car seems like the best one. which it obviously is.

Do any TTs have traction control?

Some TTs have traction control (not many) and a limited slip diff option (rarer again). I used to have a GT-TL which had ultrasonic heated mirrors, LCD rear view mirror and sunroof (as well as the electrics, ABS etc).

The TEMS in most early models aren't very noticeable, however the shocks themselves aren't too expensive to replace (I think it was about $80/ea... don't quote me on that though). The TEMS in the later models (well from what I notice in my 97 anyway) is much more noticeable, but the struts are about 3 times the price.

Traction control is not fun really. But i think its 'fun' a it limits the danger of losing traction in the wet.... Quite usefull in some situations.

I like safety features...

No, you are confused. Air struts for a UZZ31 cost $800+ each. TEMS dampers are not the same thing and cost less than a quarter of that, similar to standard good quality shocks.

Graham, what did you pay?

Oh well if the TT dampers are different and cheaper than the v8s then i wouldnt mind getting a TT with the tems damper suspension...

It was over two years since I bought them and one was dearer than the other but, two rear tems shocks cost $460.90 including $13 freight. One was the old part no(4853029215) for $140 + gst and the other was new part no(4853029365) for $266 + gst, both with ALSC discount. The actual new part no list price was $399.84 + gst. I did hear that not long after I bought these, Toyota lowered some of there prices on grey import parts, so the shocks may have come down(but then again maybe not). They aren't the cheapest shocks around but I like them. I should get around to buying some new fronts.

I stand corrected heheheheh

All I know is that for my Soarer I was quoted $300 each (don't know if there's a part number difference between the earlier vs. later model TEMS).
