I looked back quite a few times on this thread and what was said. At first I didn't understand the pin found a few good pages like this one http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?63033-how-does-jz-timing-belt-tensioner-work Its really easy to get to on the 1uz just like someone with a supra suggests in this thread. They use the same tensioner from what I read.

I have a chaser that has a 1jz-gte vvti. Barely enough room to put the car on TDC. Good car though never had a single issue with it since I've had it.

OK figured out why my air con won't turn on. I didn't mention it before because I thought it was a coincidence. What looks like the earth wire is just sitting there. Anyone got pics of what it's suppose to look like? Guessing I have to put a bolt through it into the bracket? Today I also fixed a issue I had with idle and stalling. It was just the bolts on the airflow metre. Trial and error found out its a 4mm bolt. Also slight leak probably they haven't done a clamp up properly somewhere. Trying to wash it and see where it appears. Its around the power steering area or auto trans hoses.

Sorry Dave I meant on the supra forums someone said that you can reach the tensioner easily without moving anything. Although not a Soarer, Toyota have a way of repeating similar setups and reusing parts in different cars.

| You could also use longer bolts ,when refitting the tensioner to compress it till you can remove one long bolt to replace it with the correct bolt then pull it up a bit more and replace that one with short one ,saves putting a pin in it. Earth AC

Yes someone at work told me this and I forgot about it and mentioned it again. Would it overtightened the belt using the bolts to tighten it up? I read this but I doubt it would matter either way. Just looks like a standard screw. No nut on the back of it?

| Think I've found the leak where my finger points after a good degrease and wipe i can see hairline cracks. Is this easy to fix just remove hose and catch as much fluid as I can? Then top it back up simple as that?

This is my compressor. Left unbolted by the mechanic. No love whatsoever. |

there are 2 vacuum lines into the power steering pump. One goes to just above the thermostat, and the other goes into the throttle body. They increase engine revs when you are on full steering lock. If you replace the hose from above the thermostat, make sure it is a "hard/firm" hose. If it is soft, it will compress and block with the vacuum.

So those two hoses from the power steering pump only increase revs at full lock. So if they were blocked off nothing would happen other then full lock revs dropping?

correct scott, blocking all the points has no noticeable effect.

Hi Scott, Good to hear that you have fixed the car, absolutely amazing that the Mechanics could not fix it !! Tom has given you a bum steer on that pipe as it goes into the power steering reservoir it will be a supply pipe to the pump & NOT the vacuum hose he is talking about .. If you push down on the hose were the crack is does it leak ?? & as you mentioned you can cut through the hose were the crack is if there is enough hose to drag back to the reservoir & as you said it will drain the reservoir if you don't do it quickly .. One less messy way is to take off the hose from the reservoir & quickly fit another hose onto the metal pipe that is longer & goes up higher the reservoir to stop it draining & then cut the damaged pipe & then quickly pull off the temp hose & refit the newly cut hose then top up the reservoir ..

That's a good idea to cut it and bring it in. I have a syringe I can use to suck out any fluid. Maybe I can empty the reservoir and then after put the fluid back in.

Also clean the filter at the bottom of canister there will be bits in there. and Toms on about the suction side (feed )of the power steer pump

This video might be interesting to some people. Note the two vacuum lines which attach to the idle valve. Unsure which lines you guys are talking about above. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWhMb1vAS9U

No worries Tom. I am going to order the hose and change it myself. From what I have been reading there is no bleed nipple just got to bleed it similar to the radiator.

Hi Scott, If you lose a lot of fluid to bleed the power steering you need to fill up to the top of the reservoir & start the car & then check the oil level & if still ok turn the steering from lock to lock as that will cycle the oil through the whole system & will bleed it, probably better on grass or with the wheels in the air slightly to stop loading all the steering components, some people don't care though ..

I will seal it off as quick as I can and replace the hose and top it up and off the ground a bit move steering from side to side and let gravity take care of the rest. The brand of fluid doesn't matter does it?

As far as the older Toyota's like ours Auto trans is fine Dexron 2 or 3 should be fine for the power steering not sure on the newer Toyota's etc, I do know with Honda it Has to be Honda power steering otherwise they can leak !! strange but true ..

Does it matter what's already in there? Like I don't know if its dexton 2 or 3 and if I put dexton 3 in there and say it has 2 in there would it matter?

It will be fine, Dexron 3 is a later version of the 2 & you probably cant get 2 now anyway ..

As Tom said curious to know what you did & I also hope you asked for some money back too as that was just Bull with all the stuffing around you had to do & to think they had it twice !! In my eyes they shouldn't even call themselves Mechanics ( & to know they have a workshop, I feel for all the other unsuspecting customers ) As basically doing the cam timing is just a pretty straight forward procedure for a good Mechanic .. I would hate to see them try & dial in a cam using a dial gauge, they would never get it right !! ..
