The reason I put the post on was because my rubbers had the thin metal strips that Mike refers to, which are very different to the ones I'd seen in shops. The car was first imported in 1996, and I can't believe that they are the original wipers (I know we don't get much rain but that would be ridiculous), so I'm assuming that Lexus were able to source some originals.
I got some from Super Cheap Auto, and they work a treat.

Ive so far tried 3 different sets of wiper blades, all from autobahn. So far they have all been utter crap! Sweeping downward they do fine, going the other way they jump all over the place
I was considering sourcing a '95+ wiper arm with the wind deflector thing built in, but if theres rubbers available at Super Cheap then...

Neil, where would you get that? Is it a standard Toyota part? Do you have them? I happen to need a rear wiper now. The front ones I replaced with something-or-other from autObarn and they are working OK but not great.
(Autobahn is the German freeway Jeff; autObarn just trades on the idea. Uh oh. Peter Burrett's going to tell me I'm being pedantic again)

And he'd be correct David, but pedantic is ok. Shows just how much attention I pay to their signs and advertisement. May as well save themselves the money and not bother.

The original blades with the metal strips are BOSCH brand about $30 a set. we fit about 3-4 sets a day, but the best advice is clean the glass regularly and even the cheap ones will work well (for a while)

I use trico commodore VR-VT inserts which you cut to lenght normally around $17. The advice re European fitment is right, but it works best with the original soarer insert arms, if you look the passenger one is curved and is marked with a (P).Also the drivers one is stamped (D) is straight but longer. With a clean screen they work beautifully.

You could try what I use, which is fine grade steel wool (obtainable from supermarkets etc). Clean windscreen first, then while WET, use the steel wool. Go over the ENTIRE screen, paying particular attention to the areas that are covered by the arc of the wipers. Keep the screen wet at all times. You'll know it's fully cleansed when you don't feel a "Drag" from the steel wool.
Rinse screen thoroughly, and dry with a clean lint free towel, fit NEW wiper refills.
I just bought wipers from super cheap auto and they worked a treat. I bought the Aunger Brand with silicone and they wipe very clean up and down. I spent $10
