hi guyz, just a really quick question, i searched the forum but didnt find exactly what i was aftre..i bought a set of apec apache wheels 18x8 for the front and 19x8 for the rear. offset 45. they look great but the fronts dont fit. St George tyres(supplier) has supplied for soarers in the past and says they should fit. the front calipers rub VERY well on the rim..? what should the offset be? are there different types }}of 'standard' calipers? i need to know though so i can get this rectified...thanx heaps, and thanx for the post soarer central!!

the offset if fine, you just need a set of mags that will clear the caliper itself. so you got to find the right design.

Probably to V8's - they have smaller calipers. Take em back.

Luc, we appreciate people using capital letters where appropriate and drop the SMS speak. The correct spelling is "guys" and "thanks". You didn't really save many keystrokes.

Please read Rules and Policy. Thanks.

Hello Luc welcome :-)

If the wheels don't fit with +45mm offset you should ask them to get lower offset fronts (if you want to keep the current wheel design) as I'm pretty sure that the design of the wheel wouldn't clear the fronts at all. My old wheels just cleared my old wheels with a +38mm offset, so it really depends on the design of the wheel when it's a 1 piece.

First and final warning for this??
z is right next to s, so it could have been a result of pressing a wrong key, I think most of us have done that once or twice.
Thanx... this version is so common that it will end up in a dictionary soon as an official word.
geee, so pedantic, give him a break Peter, it only his second post.

Greg, a lot of stuff is getting common including housebreaking, doesn't mean we have to accept it.

Offset is WRONG.
Soarers are 50mm offset.
45mm wheels will fit but there are tramlining/alignment/clearance issues.
Not all 50mm wheels will clear bigger brakes either.

Luc, I'm running the Apec Apache 19x8 all round on the 38 offset and they come very close to the calipers anyways. You might need to run a offset such as 38 instead of 45 to clear the calipers, or if they wont take the wheels back you may need a spacer. Good luck.

CompAring housebreaking to SMS talk is not what Peter did. He just generalised on what is commonly acceptable and what is not. SMS speak is NOT acceptable here like housebreaking or hoonig/speeding is not acceptable (myself excluded off cause).

Offset isn't the be all and end all of clearing brakes. Plenty of +50 rims fail to clear big brakes and plenty of +10 rims will clear with no problems.

The measurement that determines brake clearance is called the "X" factor, sounds stupid, but it's true. It's the measurement from the mounting surface of the wheel hub to the back of the spokes. Many times, offset has absolutely nothing to do with that measurement.

To say that a rim of a certain offset will not clear particular brakes is a misleading and insupportable generalisation

Whether it's a good idea to run +10 offset rims on a car designed for +50 is another matter entirely, a can of worms I am going to keep a firm lid on

On a 1-piece wheel it's all down to the actual design of the wheel and it's offset. Usually a +38mm will clear the fronts if the design is correct, and I've seen a few +45mm offset wheels clear the fronts on our cars. On multi-piece wheels it comes down to both the offset and design again but usually you can escape the design part by having a high-disk offset to clear the brakes (eg. Volk GT-C wheels have two versions... Face 1 and Face 2 for people wanting nice dish but still clear the calipers... and obviously a hell lot more expensive).

Hmmm.... +10mm offset on a car designed to run +50mm... that'd be interesting
