My gf got pulled up in my Soarer this morning by a cop claiming that intercoolers are illegal! I just have mesh on my Phoenix bar and he thought it was an intercooler. She pointed it out to him and also told him that intercoolers aren't illegal but being a cop he thinks he knows everything and kept trying to convince her that they're illegal. Then he said you must get sick of being pulled up in this cop magnet! And people wonder why we hate cops! I told her to take down his name next time and carry a tape recorder as I'm sick of f@@ken cops that think they know it all!
Can anyone point me to the government site that mentions what mods you can legally do?? So I can print it out and carry it in the car to show the next f@*ken that thinks they know it all.
My car is stock except for the kit and lowered (legally), it even has a stock airbox. I do plan to put an intercooler on eventually.

Did you get defected though? Take some pictures to show that you don't have an intercooler I suppose?

The cop is right. Basically any modification is technically illegal unless you have documentation of the car meeting compliance. I believe that can include an engineer's report AND ADR 79/00 certification.

Nah didn't get defected as he realised it's just mesh, but this tosser had a bit of an attitude.
I came across documentation a while back stating that you can legal have either a bigger intercooler or one of those pod filters. Since I have a stock airbox there's no reason I can't have a FMIC.

Does that mean someone with a stock intercooler is driving an illegal car?

I think you're talking about this

http://epanote2.epa.vic.gov.au/EPA/Publications.nsf/d85500a0d7f5f07b4a2565d1002268f3/c90ec843f3bbbe8 fca256d9f00181c59/$FILE/1031.pdf

That's just the EPA though. You have to keep the EPA and VicRoads happy.

It's just the EPA though. You might be able to find something in the Vicroads stuff:

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/RulesStandardsRegulations/VehicleStandardsInformation/

Maybe this one:
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/5C946861-35D8-42CF-A1A6-BA00F3D3A104/0/VSI20.pdf
There is great stuff in there like how you can drive without a hood etc. There are various issues that they don't mention with some of the stuff in there though!

You are allowed one intake modification which includes an intercooler. To say an intercooler is illegal is not correct.

Soarers and many other forced induction cars have them from factory and they are perfectly legal.

Remember though it is possible to mount an intercooler illegally just as you can mount a number plate illegally.

It is an EPA rule but most cluey places wont give you a roadworthy with more than one induction mod either.

What's funny is here in Sydney, you see mainly older (45+ year olds) driving around in Soarers, and cops tend not to bother with them, so we are safe.

that sucks, I have been pulled over once in 6 months, never had an issue.....

Having said that, 3 days in a row I have been fined for parking without a valid ticket on my windscreen (sucks getting stuck in meetings and not being able to get abck to the car in time to feed the meter).

I agree completely. Cops dont look at me once...they prefer to hunt down poor P platers in old ford lasers who have 5 people in the car or old commodores because apparently they're all stolen.

Brian move up to the central coast, we don't have a single parking meter.

I have never had a fine in my life for any driving offences but have been pulled over a heap of times for "random" checks and I don't have P plates or a body kit!

It's getting to the point now if I see a highway patrol car going in the other direction I put my foot flat to the floor and tear off into the distance and rip up a side street to hide because 90% of the time the cops do a U-Turn to try and pull me over.

what do you expect them to do Maurice, they see a Muppet behind the wheel so they react.
I only got pulled up once in 3 years and that's because my plates were stolen (3 days ago)

I dont get pulled over, and I dont exactly pussy-foot around in my car, the exhaust can be heard blocks away under open throttle.

I was told be a close friend (one of the Qld highway patrol head of departments) that police look for "rough cars, as they are usually unroadworthy, or dangerously defectable, they look for louts in cars (a bunch of backward capped teens usually means a hoon driver, easily booked for speeding), and they also look for lowered, tripped out cars with huge bloinging wheels, overly lowered suspension (bouncing and cut springs), massive exhaust systems, and stickering all over the cars (stickers usually mean modifications which means defects).

Some cops are much better than others, and know their sh1t, my friend actually holds a mechanical qualification, and knows the difference between mech and an intercooler, but I know some cops are d1ckh3ads.

I encountered a cop that looked at my old 180sx, visualled the aftermarket vent to atmosphere BOV, the wire-mounted intercooler, the seriousled lowered suspension, and moved me on, then pulled over a pretty much stock Mazda 3 SP23, told him off for the RTA issued black and gold number plates, claiming he painted them himself, then he had a go at the guy for 'the intercooler' (it was the a/c condensor radiator),

Hehe, a while ago a copper up here pulled me over going a wee little over the limit, and proceeded to lecture me about modifications. Checking my license he noted that I was previously from Victoria, and after making his point about the front mount said:

"You think you are soo smart and you think I am some backward redneck Darwinian who knows nothing about turbos, just coz you used to live in Victoria"?

I replied,

"No, I think you are a 'caring, understanding Northern Territorian'."

So dumb...... so so dumb..........Id pay the fine over again to call him that twice!

Not a freaking chance around here! As I have always had my good Corona kept safely in the garage for the odd occasion, I have always had old toyotas as daily drivers. From old corollas, camry and now another rona.

A little while back I was driving my ke70 (1982) corolla. This was the worst of the cars I had owned. I pulled up at a set of lights. Cop pulls up next to me a few seconds later. I saw him look over but didn't make eye contact :-) Now to picture my car, faded yellow paint, indicator held on with zip tie (on his side), basically the whole rear quarter panels/ c pillar were RUSTY as! Not only this but at that time, the gearbox was just starting to itself and was making strange grinding noises. So I take off as lights go green, grinding gears away. Mr Po Po continues on his way and takes off in front of me (my car was very slow).
Now can you imagine if I had pulled up to the same cop in my bright yellow, nicely painted, slightly lowered, bonnet scooped, corona with a few racing stickers on it. I am 99% sure that I would have been REAMED bigtime.

Cops are just people as well remember. Some good, some bad. Uncle & mate are both cops. Uncle used to be a mechanic and probably knows a hell of a lot more about cars than a lot of people here :-) So don't go assuming. (That being said, he does a lot more important things than pull over random cars, like catching criminals :-))
