hey. i just found a Celsior (think its just a C spec) in great interior nick (has a large scratch/bent panels down passenger side (not to much to fix)) for auction in Jap for about $2000 (180,000 jpy). just wondering if something like that is worth getting imported? what else is involved in buying a car to getimported/complianced? anyone? cheers

?? spewing. that stinks. this one is in real good condition (except for scratches etc). so the only way to get a celsior in Aus is to buy one privately?

I thought you still could you just have to have to get full compliance done now, instead of the bare minimum under the old 15-year rule. Email someone like Neil Griffiths, I am sure he could confirm whether or not its possible but I'm pretty sure it still is, it just costs more now.

Sorry Sam I didn't realise you were in SA mate. The other alternative is to check out Yahoo Motorsport at http://home.iprimus.com.au/jverban/ He specialises in importing 15 year old cars and is located in Adelaide. He's always got a heap of Celsiors, plus it saves you the headache of having to bring one over and dealing with the nightmare of the never ending queue for shipping! (trust me I speak from experience, its not pretty!) All the cars there need to be complianced, which normally costs about $1500 max. I'd say the price would probably work out to be about the same, maybe a little cheaper when you take into account shipping, taxes, compliance, etc.
Just a thought, but I'd definitely say its worth looking into.

I would seriously look at buying local (ie freshly complied car from an import dealer) before deciding to go DIY - there should be plenty of Celsiors to choose from and you will save yourself a lot of time and hassle of buying/importing/complying.
If you do decide to import, *only* buy from the auctions and *only* if you have seen the auction sheet and photos first... i would not buy from Yahoo/ebay/whatever nor would i buy cars advertised on websites.... unless you can get an unbiased report on the car (ie auction sheet) you have no way of knowing what you are getting and yes if you do your research you will find people who have been ripped off by getting cars from dealers either here or in Japan which were shall we say 'not what they were made out to be'

well said Phil, I've heard a number of horror stories myself. A friend and I used to import cars ocassionally from Japan because he had family friends over there in the business. However, now with all the red tape bulls**t the government has introduced over importing and the extensive shipping delays its just not worth it. Due to the new rules and the cost of compliance these days the savings just generally aren't that great plus if you buy from a car yard you get a warranty.
Consider this, if you buy a car for $2000 in Japan, it will cost you approximately between $1500 - $3000 to get it over here (including taxes, stamp duty, etc.) Then another $3000 - $4000 to get the car complianced and on the road. So all up you're still looking at about $9-$10k with no warranty, no idea of the condition of the car, and realistically speaking if you were to buy it tomorrow you probably wouldn't have the car on the road for at least another 3-6 months. And if you can't get the car on a ship straight away you have to pay a fee while it sits on the docks and waits. If I was you Sam I'd look around locally first, its just not worth importing older cars anymore unless you want something really unique.
Just my 2c but as I said, I speak from a fair bit of experience.

I was trying to import my car into Japan when I left Japan. I was thinking about selling mine for about $2500-$3000USD.. then you add in all the fee's listed above.. it really is a pain and unless you get ALOT for it, it may not be worth it. Just my opinion.. but it may work out for you

{edit: It appears the Celsior is not allowed under SEVS, therefore you cant import one any more... looks like the decision has been made for you, you must buy local

you might still have a chance of getting a celsior as many cars that were only eligible were bought prior to march this yr but couldnt be brought here as they actualy didnt turn 15yrs. Once they do there posted up on many dealers websites and you can import it under 15yo rule. Hmm i imported from www.imports101.com.au and danny helped me out. Good service but should be better now that the 15yo rush is over. Also www.prestigemotorsport.com.au seems good but havnt tryed em. Anyone know which one would be better?
