Hello guys,

I am posting this on behalf of my parents. They need help buying a used car. They have a 92 Cressida which at the moment is on it's way out. The motor has a problem and we do not know what it is. A year ago it had a blown head gasket rebuild and can only assume the dodgy mechanics that worked on it somehow stuffed something up because the car loses power from 2000 revs an beyond and has never been the same since. Or it could be something else. Diagnostic test came up with the knock sensor. Replaced it and still comes up with the electrical warning. We have taken it to 2 auto electricians and 1 mechanic. Had then taken it to another mechanic to tell us that it has oil leaking into spark plugs, engine bypass hose cracked, no.2 injector leaking, suspect intake manifold leak, and the head failed a TK test.

They can't afford to repair all these things and hope the best that the problem goes away. So they are looking to spend no more than $3000 on another used car. I'm asking you guys what you think is a better more reliable car for them. Of course the motor of the next car is a concern to us and must be reliable as we don't wan't anymore problems occurring. They don't have much cash as they are paying off land they purchased in tassie. Hope you guys understand. Cheers.

Justin, I owned a 1987 Skyline for 6 years and had next to no trouble. You could pick up a nice one for that money.

1990-1995 Toyota Camry. Solid car with Toyota reliability and cheap local parts.

I fuel economy is a factor and space is not...then I would recommend a suzuki swift. I have a 5speed 88 hatch, it runs on the smell of an oily rag, has been reliable, I regularly travel up to 400k a week just to work, I use the oil I take out of my soarer in it and have had no problems for over a year, and if something does go wrong they are easy to work on, parts are cheap and easy to find..... I paid 2 Grand for mine with new clutch (think they come in auto too)has air con, and came with lots of service history.

Second the Camry. I picked my '91 model up about 3 years ago for $4500 in perfect condition. It's still a very nice car to drive and reliable as hell.

Third for the Camry. These cars are indestructible and very fuel efficient, enough space for 4-5 people and a large boot. Done and done

Yeah, Ok I was thinking the Camry V6 too with the 1mz-fe over the 3vz-fe. Other choice of car was a Nissan Maxima V6, which I noticed the VQ engine has been in Ward's 10 Best Engines for 13 years straight. We will be checking out some cars next weekend.

Justin, I can vouch for the Maxima. Had a 97 30G model for 3 years and it was a great luxury car for the money. The V6 has great pickup for an engine its size. Reliable as hell. Good on fuel. And the ride quality was the best of any car I've ever driven. If only they were rear-wheel drive, I would have kept mine...

I vouch for the Camry too, I had a wide body 93 4cyl which a mate now owns and its only needed one new alternator in the last 3 years and has over 260klms on the clock.
Bought it for 3k and sold it for 3k

If they were in NZ they could probably pick up a reasonable soarer for 3k... prices here have gone silly the last few months. It's almost quite sad...

Sorry I can't help with your question though, as I have no idea what car prices are like over in Australia currently. :-(

Camry:
but I also have a 99 VT Acclaim Wagon that I have had since 10k km and has now got 290k km. Had it serviced every 10k km and I reckon it has another 200k in it at least. Nothing on repairs apart from service items.

I would not Recommend my Merc or my 32 as being cheap reliable motoring but they have been so much fun and I wouldn't part with any of them.
