I've read the tutorial on how to clean the stock intercooler and drain out all the oil that gathers in it. But I don't really have the garage/time/patience do it.
However!
My car has almost ticked over 225,000 kms, and I don't actually know if it's ever been cleaned at all. So even though it's a job, and I'll have to borrow a mate's garage, is it worth doing?

Yes it is worth doing. If it has not ever been done chances are there will be a fair bit of oil in it. The oil breather is set up so the spent fumes are recycled through the air system (see leftside cam cover). now this oil accumulates over time and usually sits in the intercooler. Once the intercooler is coated in a film of oil it then reduces the amount of air it can cool, thus making your intercooler not do its job.
Its a pretty easy job, just jack the car up, undo the hoses, unbolt and remove. First time i did mine (stock cooler) it was full of oil, yet when I had the front bar off a couple of weeks ago i cleaned out my Hybrid cooler and not 1 drop of oil in it and this is 12 months after I fitted it.

Looks like I'll be whippin out the tools this weekend. The car runs beautifully already, which is why I've been putting it off. So I spose after a good ol clean out, it should run even beautifullier!

I did mine when i 1st bought my Soarer a while ago and it was pretty filthy.
when I fitted my FMIC, my SMIC was EMPTY, it was so clean I put it on my front seat on the drive home, not a drop, my Soarer was a virgin before it, either that or my PCV was always operational.

I didnt mean filled with oil or anything, but there was certainly a film of oil in the piping.
The cooler itself was filthy, as in full of bugs, rocks, twigs, feathers and chucks of a bird haha. I straightend most the fins also which was a long and drawn out process.... geez i was patient back then (or maybe just keen)

The tutorial makes it SOUND harder than it actually is. Hoses shouldn't be a problem to put back on. When fitting just gently pry it open with a screwdriver and they just slip back on! Try and screw the air vent onto the intercooler BEFORE putting the hoses back on, will save on the frustration of trying to align it and screw on afterward.
Should note however, the fins are extremely sensitive and almost break on contact! So I'd be careful about straightening the fins. If you find a way to do it without breaking them let us know.
