Shell Optimax Extreme
The power of 100 octane
With the natural quality of ethanol

Optimax Extreme White Horse

Shell Optimax Extreme is a new super-high octane fuel with a minimum octane rating of 100, the highest currently available at any Australian service station. Shell Optimax Extreme is formulated with 5% ethanol.

Shell Optimax Extreme is formulated to deliver more engine responsiveness, sharper acceleration and enhanced power in many modern and high performance vehicles compared to other Shell premium fuels.

Ethanol is a renewable non-fossil fuel produced in Australia. When used in fuel it’s a cleaner burning, renewable component that helps to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, through the formulation with ethanol, Shell Optimax Extreme has a substantially lower sulphur and benzene content than the maximum levels set under the Federal Government’s fuel quality standards. Ethanol is a cleaner burning, renewable fuel component that helps to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions.

Would this be any good for our cars? Or would the difference between this and 98 octane be minimal?

According to the Aus Manufacturers' site, Toyota/Lexus cars using the 1UZ and 1JZ engines are OK, going by the models they list. For information on the differences from 100 octane fuel with 5% ethanol, see here:

This result is consistent with previous threads on ethanol. Owing to the lower energy content, fuel consumtpion will rise. However, it is quite possible to run a high octane rating. If you have consistent access to 100 octane, feel free to tune via your Unichip to the new rating if the power gain is cost-effective. If you have some other ECU rather than a piggy-back, see Manny's warning above.

In previous threads I have strongly favoured using 98 octane, and my car is tuned to take best advantage of it. However, there is only one site in Canberra selling 100 octane and only a few in Sydney, and I have not yet seen the prices, so I am in no hurry to re-tune.
