After replacing 2 serpentine belts which failed after about 8000k each, I wondered what could be the problem. What I found was quite intriguing. On the alternator pulley I have one extra groove and I was putting the new belt onto this pulley with the empty groove at the rear. This turned out to be the wrong thing to do as it was ever so slightly out of alignment, hence the belt failure as it slowly shredded. This probably is not common, but I thought it was worth a mention.
