I recently read an American review of a 95 V8 including performance specs. It stated the stock V8 would do 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds. Is this crap or is there something wrong with my car. I've done all the cheap things like change plugs, BFI etc. but I can't get below 8 seconds with 2 on board.

This has been discussed once or twice. My previous car claimed 0-100 in 7.2 and was obviously faster than my V8. The is300 claims 8.1 secs and felt a shade faster than my V8 before modification. I believe I should now be in the low sevens. The figures here seem more realistic for stock cars:
http://www.northshoreprestige.com.au/

A few straightforward reasons for the difference:
  • The american cars were UZZ30, not 31 or 32, so they were lighter with the engine running fewer gadgets.
  • 60mph is 96km/h which means for our figure we have to gain a few more km/h at the point where our acceleration has reached its worst.
  • One person means less weight, and it makes a difference even on a 4 litre V8.
  • It appears the American practice is to pull every available trick to get that time down. Because everyone else does it, each new tester would look a bit silly if they simply drove the car with normal stuff in it like I do and accelerated with my levels of dragging skill.
  • Given the same imperative, American manufacturers/distributors 'prep' the cars more so than is done here.

So, for practical purposes you can select answer "crap" and move on. The important question is whether you can compete with the sorts of cars that have similar power and weight figures. How are you measuring BTW?

Thanks David, that puts my mind to rest especially after reading the Australian specs.
I'm not really interested in getting off the mark in a hurry, but it does bother me when it bogs down at low revs. A unichip (or similar) is coming in 2006 and should make my grin wider.
Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know what BTW is.

Thanks Don. I'm measuring with a friend on board with a stopwatch. (A gowatch might help)

"British Thermal Watts"?

Sorry, my fault for not including a comma after measuring or putting BTW at the start of the sentence. There is sometimes a fine line between what is SMS-speak (forbidden) and what is net-speak (permitted). Basically, it seeems well-known acronyms are OK but digits for syllables and mis-spelling are not. Fortunately we have GIFs for most purposes, like LOL, ROFL and LMFAO

If your car is bogging at low revs then an ECU reset could encourage it to shift down and get a move on;
or you could get a lighter friend.
