Frank, Not that we will ever see when we are driving. I would say this is a motor being tuned and tested on a stand in a performance shop. Well as the photo shows they obviously can, though the ever day engine won't be worked hard enough to reach these conditions i wouldn't expect. Regards Stephen

Obviously this one did. As Stephen says, it looks like it's on a rig doing full noise and the heat looks more due to the picture being taken in the dark and the contrast makes it look hotter.

Somewhere on the ALSC site there's a picture of a UZ engine running with the exhaust manifold glowing cherry red so if there was a turbo fitted that too would have glowed the same. As for the V12 geny, at full load, well it's good for it because most generators I've been involved with (diesel) were emergency ones that only got a short run on small loads and tended to carbon up if not given the gun every now and again.

I used to have pics of the prototype Chrysler 2 litre turbo motor on test on a dyno. They hooked up a fuel tanker and ran it dry. Took 3 weeks @ 6500 rpm. The whole head and top of the block were cherry red and the turbo and manifold white. They then filled it up and wound the revs up a bit until it blew, they're probably still finding bits of it around the place!
