Does anyone know how long an import can be out of rego so that I will not affect the compliance.

ie after 12 months is it a simple matter of getting a RWCert and new rego.

What does the inspection involve, and how much does it cost.

I just bought a 31 that was brought in and complied but never got reg'd. It was hit 4 years ago on trade plates, i now have to get an engineers certificate and RWC only because i will be the first person to register it.

You should only need to get a RWC, cost will be around 100 just for inspection and whatever needs to be repaired. The inspection will be on based on safety of the vehicle to you and other motorists. Main things they pick on are Windscreens, Tyres, Brakes, Oil leaks.
