If you have ABS....you get to it from under the car!! It's the most annoying thing about the car.

Jack the car up and try to reach it from further back....there should be a bigger opening then what your trying to reach it through if your looking straight up. I don't know if that makes any sense.

I put mine up onto ramps and then grab the bugger from underneath. Maybe try and con a skinny mate into doing it??

V8's are easy.
Some TT's aren't too bad, I know of one TT that can just be changed from the top, but whether it's because it has TRC or because it's a later 94 model I am not sure.
The rest of the TT's require either getting underneath or a filter re-location kit.

Balance out the cost of the kit versus the saving in mechanics time and see if it works for you.

I pay a mechanic to do mine. I could manage it through the wheel arch (no abs) however at $160ish or whatever i pay, i get Mobil1 oil, some fancy pants filter, ~3L of transmission fluid (drop the pan and drain), all other fluids topped up and a whole lot of other things that get looked over as per usual mechanic-based services.

Joe has done quite a bit to my car now, so he is more aware of any quirks/whatever, so i feel quite happy paying the guy to keep an eye on it mechanically and bringing his thoughts on things to my attention.

I always do my V8 from underneath and take the tray off. It only takes a couple of minutes. The advantage of this is you can give the tray a quick wipe over and keep it really clean, making it easy to spot the source of any fluid leaks down the track.

Just squirt with degreaser then hose off after doing your filter change from above.

I just do my filter up firm by hand then to undo give a goood twist from up top. I don't have the plastic gaurd under the sump so oil goes into container. All done in 5-10 min never will leak if face is clean and filt firm.
