Right, Neil has finally got his act together and is sending me some of these...

For the uninitiated, they are aerodynamic under trays, complete with venturis to direct air where it is meant to go. I will be organising the copying of these items (all things going well) and will have them available for sale here.

What I need to know is how many of you reckon you'd want a set, as that would influence how I make my mould.

At a 'guestimate', these from fibreglass would cost about $3-400, and $6-800 from carbon fibre. These figures may go up or down a bit, a lot, or stay about the same, I wont be able to give a firm price until the mould has been made.

As I said, just looking for eoi, and that's genuine eoi. Not meaning to sound like a prick, but I need to know who many of you think that you'd do this this year. If you're only going to put it on your wish list, don't post eoi here. As I said, I need to know around how many want them so the mould can be made to suit, ie I don't want to make a fully reinforced mould (DAYS involved, not just hours) if I'm only going to make 5-6 sets so this would help me out greatly.

Cheers

BTW, they's also be supplied as according to the picture. That is it would be up to you to drill the holes for the mounting points in the right places. As everyone seems to have a different front/rear bar, minor shape differences (accident damage, etc) I don't want to pre-drill the holes to suit my car only to have you find that it won't mate up to yours!

So your saying, roughly 400 for the front AND back in fibreglass?

Ide prefer the back only to be honest, i like being able to access my oil filter without too much fuss.

VERY interested

Would prefer a stained black fibreglass

Roughly. Yes, they will be black. Gel coated fibreglass, basically a layer of black resin, same finish as you would have a white boat.

And yes, I will do them as seperate pieces. I'll hive you all more info when I get them from Neil.

It is a sad, sad day for the modified panel industry today!

Just got told by one of my suppliers that Airbus has just about bled Australia (and everywhere else) dry of it's carbonfibre supplies to build their new jets. Now the only places that still have it in stock have nearly doubled the price!!!

Ben, one thing to consider in this is the FREIGHT..
That front panel is not going to be cheap to send.
I have to make some form of timber bracing for it before I can send.( otherwise it WILL get damaged in transit )
It bloody HUGE..

I will try to take pics of these HELD up under a Soarer.

Already working on that mate, got a few ideas running through my brain atm.

Good news, just got off the phone with a few contacts, turns out if I can jag a trade account with a certain firm, I can buy the carbon and KEVLAR composite, (pretty yellow and black checkers, think V8 supercar ducting) for only $14/m more than just the plain carbon!!! Only 2/3 weight for the equivalent strength carbon, and way more wank factor

Any idea what the average ambient temperature could be that these will be subjected to? That will influence what type of resin chemistry that I use.

Unless it sits idling for a while, or the car has just come off the track.

Ben, at what temperature ranges do things change?

Oil shouldn't affect the resin.

Basic resins will withstand about 55-60 degrees C when stressed. There are others that will withstand more than 120 degrees C but they can be harder to work with.

Having said that, I wouldn't expect more than 50 degrees C unless there's exhaust running in close proximity to the tray. And there's not much stress on an undertray when sitting at idle.

I usualy only use the good stuff, unless I'm just doing a bit of testing. The basic polyester resin that I use can withstand a constant 75 degrees C.

The next level up is vinylester that apparently (guy in shop said, I've never tested this one) handles 95 degrees C.

Up one more level in heat resistance, and has WAY more structual strength is a fancy epoxy resin. This one only starts to lose its structual integrity above 125 degrees C. I have sucessfully used this one on a radio controlled boat hull that sported a blown whipper snipper motor with noz (this guy is a NUTTER!) and had no dramas.

A bit like body bog, it all comes down to the mix really. Polyester uses 50 parts resin to 1 part hardener, epoxy uses 4:1. If you start upping the strength or 'baking' it to speed up the drying time, it has a major effect on the finished product. Going one step further on this, there's a place out the north side of town that specialise in carbon racing yacht hulls, the room where they lay their matting and resin would rival Intel's clean room!!!

BTW, I will be able to source the materials at 23% less cost if I can jag that trade account. If I can't, I'll need someone with a car related business to fill in the form for me, Neiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil ???

No worries mate, I just have to get them first, then I can copy them, THEN I can quote a final price. I should be able to work out a deal with a few transport companies through work, only thing is that you'll probably need to go to their transport depo to collect them.

I have some ideas to make the packaging smaller and more efficient as well, so I will let you know how that goes.

in for fibreglass definately, as long as its not in the next 2 months so i can save the $$$.

One thing i found when people are doing the transport for things like that that can be stacked, the transport cost comes down massively when you get multiple parts because its divided up between many people but the price for actual shipping stays basically the same.

Already thought about stacking for multiple items to a similar destination.

No probs about time frame either, once I have the mould, its there forever!

In regards to "stacking", we could get them sent to niles or neils, who evers closer, as when they do become available, ill be getting him to put it on anyway... Just a thought

All depends doesn't it? Try putting a plastic heatshield over the turbos and tell me that heat is no problem

Polyester resin will be fine, unless your car is absolutely worked off its tits, ie 350+ at the wheels, I can't see anything less generating enough heat down there (heat rises remember?) to cause a problem.

Ben, Dan's point wasn't that plastic is heat proof, but that as the original is plastic, then presumably the heat level isn't enough to cause problems for the under tray.

Heat rises then finds the bonnet is shut and decides to look else where for an out. :-)

There is also the possibility of radiant heat, not just hot air, but I agree with Dan that if it was a problem, the OEM plastic ones would have had more problems.
