My diff has blown and now I need to fit a new one. Have purchased a 1997 TT diff and I'm thinking of installing it myself. I got a heavy duty jack, 4 stands and the usual mechanics tools. I have worked on the car before doing other small jobs (like replacing alternator, power steering pump, fuel pump, etc) but never a diff. Is it a hard job to do at home? And what else would I need except the diff and fluid?

Thanks Peter. That's a good write-up. I've seen that article before, but I was after other people's opinions that have tried this at home.

As long as your mechanic uses the correct fluids....$200 is a good price. I would let him do it.

Allow 4 hours for your first diff change with a helper to lift it in place (steadying it on the trolley jack.) Or con a mate in helping you with the promise of repaying the favour. Its one of those simple unbolt remove, replace and bolt up jobs. Just don't drop it on yourself!!!

Yes, it's best to have a helper, one person to hold the diff centre, and the other to bolt it in place. I'd get it done professionally, $200 is a great price providing the correct oils are used. Good luck.

Sports and Luxury Cars quoted me that price, so I'm guessing they will use the correct oils.

| I'm only a weekend mechanic and I did my diff swap on my own the hard way. Interpreted, this means you should be able to too! It just depends whether you get satisfaction from working on your own car verses paying others. It took me a complete day as I ran into complications with my big exhaust getting in the way and I had to disassemble more than I had planned. I just balanced the old and new diff on a jack stand with a board on it as in the photo, so I could align it properly. The rest is pretty much, unbolt and bolt back again ( with the right diff ).

If you are going to pay a workshop to do it, you can always supply your own oil. Not all workshops use premium grade lubricants as it effects their bottom line profits. "Oils ain't oil's" .... I personally used Redline Shockproof in my differential. No problems yet.

It just came through my mind, since the new diff I bought was from a 97 TT, could it be an LSD one? Anyway I can check?
