So i got a Cressida with a 1uz (5 spd) and I want to go turbo. Had supercharger sitting here, but after much research and deliberating, turbo is the way to go. and I'm of 70% sure I want to go single turbo, because I think it will be easier/cheaper... by all means correct me if i'm wrong tho.

So.

1. Can i use the factory headers on the 1uzfe (mate looked at them this arvo and said they were steel so he could modify them if needed too) and if they do need modifying, how so (angles/looks etc.)
2. I haven't got THAT much engine bay space so i'm thinking I link the 2 exhaust outlets up on the left side of the car (sitting in the car) next to the gearbox and mount turbo here. Is this the best place for space limitations? Considering I want to run an intercooler with right to left (looking from the front of the car) so then I can put the 3" straight through the factory intake...

3. Mate can get me braided oil lines in just about any size and T-peices. Do i need an extra oil pump to run the turbo or will the factory output with a t-piece be fine? (Also what sizes/lengths would I need for such applications?)

4. I already have an aftermarket ECU + fuel pump so I know I need a rising rate fuel regulator (wanna run about 10psi). IS there anything else i'm missing apart from piping/lines?

5. Idle control valve. Explain?

6. Putting labor aside, I have a few mates that do boiler-making/engineering/steel stuff, so assuming I can get fabrication done for free, what am i looking at cost wise in materials + turbo.

7. Which Turbo would be recommended (thinking the GT35/40 item from the XR6 Turbos (rated at 700hp i think), as I want to hit boost about 3-3500rpm, I got V8 so lag don't matter much, but keeping in mind the power band drops off at about 5500 rpm)?

8. What is the most time consuming part of the whole setup, ASSUMING everything goes to plan/Can I do this progressively, or is my car gonna be off the road for big chunks at a time?

9. Anything else I need to know?

Your help is much appreciated. Cheers :-)

Sounds like you've got it sorted mate, although I think putting a smallish turbo on each bank (possible even a CT12a from the 1JZ's) would be a whole lot easier to fit. Keep in mind that if you want to single turbo any V shaped engine, it would be an absolute mission making manifolds to fit, considering both the exhaust manifolds and intake manifolds would have to be stretched half way around the block to join at the turbo...
I'd say your best bet would be sequential twin turbos, one on each bank would be relatively easy to fit and more responsive. You could even use two standard 1JZ intercoolers, one on each side, I've got a spare I'd give you if you want to pay for postage from NZ. All you'd really need would be bigger injectors/fuel pump and an aftermarket computer to run it all, aside from the custom work on the manifolds it's not a hard job, I'm suprised to see not many other people doing it.

And 10psi on standard internals might be pushig them a bit, N/A engines have much higher compression than those with forced induction, so even running as low as 5psi would probably see you hitting high 12's on the quarter mile...

Anyway, good luck and make sure you keep up pics of the build :-)

KKR380's dude....perfect for that engine size and cheap enough without being crap.
Get some flat top pistons to lower your compression alittle and you will have major bang for your buck. From what I understood the KKR 380's can push 14PSI each and if you were to run your system with 14PSI....even the flat tops aint gonna be enough to lower compression

I was thinking of doing the same to my 1UZ, but space is tight for me also, if you mount it low down near the Auto, 1st is there enough room ? secondly i would think you would have to mount up a scavenge pump for the oil drain back to the sump from the turbo, as the turbo would be sitting around the same level as the sump ? ( Hence not allowing much or any drain back of oil )

If you went twins they would need to be off at least a 2 litre motor each, CT12A'S would be too small ..

I think if i ever end up doing something i will end up going the supercharger route, i like the thought of a turbo, buts its probably less work ?? supercharging .. Plus a lot less heat build up under the bonnet too, as in less exhaust snaking around etc ..
