Isn't it obvious Callum? They get in via the exhaust pipes.

There would be plenty of ways for insects to get into a car, they're not airtight. Huntsmen can flatten themselves to squeeze through a tiny slot.

We spent some time in and around Cairns during my last posting, and we parked in the centre street parking (with trees) once, we came back to the car to find it swarming with green tree ants (which sting painfully, especially en masse). Luckily they were only on the bonnet and in engine bay, but they were still there after we had driven back to our motel! It's possible they were attracted by the large number of dead insects caught in the radiator from our 800km trip from further north.

I guess they could also get in through the ventilation system.

You haven't sen "bugs" until you've driven through a locust plague! I did so once near Nyngan, and I was still finding locusts a year later! It was possible to block the radiator so badly the car'd overheat.

Many years ago a group of us on bikes struck enormous clouds of midges near Robinvale (Murray River) and we had to stop every few kms to clear our visors. You couldn't ride with them flipped up, either, you'd be blinded in metres. Incredible- we were unlucky enough to be riding through near dusk.

Actually, water can "run red" Callum, there's a phenomenon in Peru, at Lima's port, called the "Callao Painter" associated with El Nino, where normally cold water turns warm, and a massive algal bloom ensues.
