Thanks, Don. No movement on the '97 as yet, it's gathering (more) dust at the workshop. I spoke to Niall, the Irish mechanic in Sydney, who suggested that there might be some suspect wiring under the main fuse box as he had had a similar case to mine (also VVti) only a few weeks ago. He thought it would be unusual to have a voltage spike go all the way to the ECU given that there is protection on the way (although amps enough to blow a 120A fuse is pretty heavy stuff!).
I forgot to mention earler that Customs in NZ appear to have been quite heavy-handed. They pulled everything out of the boot, including the spare, then just piled it back into the boot, a real mess. One of the foam tool compartments was broken (they're not designed to take the weight of a wheel). To top it off, they also removed the rear seat and appear to have broken one of the centre seatbelt surrounds in the process. Klutzes!

There's not a lot can be done, Benny, the car passes through a number of different hands before it gets here, due to the transshipment in Auckland. Our last car, the Isuzu, had gear knocked off (including a Kenwood 2DIN stereo) so security down there seems to be an issue. I complained to the shipping agents and they reimbursed the cost of the stereo (the stuff was taken after it came into the hands of the Auckland to Norfolk Co.)I then took it (the new stereo) out coz the bright lights drove me nuts.
