The other day I was talking to a person I know. He owns a Ford Mustang fastback 65, Its been restored averagely and therefore has problems. EG, Speedo doesn’t work, glove box opens only when you wack it, seats are just arghh horrible, blinkers never work, ball joints are totally stuffed and when you go over bumps the diff touches the chassis!!
What’s funny is he thinks his car is probably one of the best mustangs around and soo much better than any soarers, infact just about every other car there is!
Regarding the Soarer his words where something like this, 'soarers are cheap Japanese crap cars that fall apart, are uncomfortable, slow as hell, look too Asian, another pathetic Toyota, they needs 100's of things like light bulbs replaced etc. What he said is totally the opposite of what they are really like. I just laughed and looked at him for a while... with a 'you have no idea look'
It just shows how little he knows about soarers! Arghh. I said how about your mustang what about all its problems etc? All he could say is narr mustangs and fords are fine they just need engines replaced that’s about it. Which is NOT the case at all.
I just walked away stunned by his absolutely stupid comments that lack any actual knowledge what so ever!! There’s no point telling people like that really how good soarers are - all you need to do is take them for a ride. This guy will definitely have more positive thoughts once I take him for a test-drive in mine.

That really gets me. I hate it when people go off their nut with a full fire and brimstone act about something that they have not researched properly. Yeah, tell me your opinion, but you don't need to get all uppety about it if I don't agree with it. Damn ignant fools!!!
Having said that, I would have no hesitations whatsoever about swapping my soarer for a mint shelby '67 GT500 'stang (ducks and covers).
Being a lover of all things automotively pretty, I can understand both sides of the argument, it really just comes down to your own personal opinion. Some like the big, brawn muscle cars, others prefer smooth luxury.
Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle... I'd like the smooth power of the soarer, with standard features, ie lose the climate control, digital dash, power windows/steering. Maybe I should just get a kit mustang and put a 1J in it
But back on topic, the world is rife with people who's only purpose in life is to badmouth your car. Just smile at them, dump the clutch and leave them for dust

My neighbor has a restored mustang in immaculate condition similar to the photo but red. My brother in law has an SLR 5000 in immaculate condition but not original as it has 450 rwhp ( normally aspirated) and a 308 that revs like my TT. Neither has said a bad thing about my car both like it. That is the difference between people who know and people who think they know.

Personally I like mustangs etc but they are not smooth and in some ways rough around the edges. They just lack the ride quality and just general quality inside and out. But depends how they are restored - Some are good others not so good. When you think about mustangs, im not mocking or anything they are just sort of racy show off cars, not comfortable or practical, and not daily driving cars.
However Soarers are just smooth driving and refined in all areas - exactly what I want as a daily driver, plus they are fast and have lots of potential!
Still mustangs and soarers are 30 years apart - so this is not an ideal comparson
All im getting at is how it’s annoying when people say, hay this cars better than a Soarer but most of the time it’s not as the person saying this doesnt understand soarers nor driven one! When I think about it not, much is better bang for buck than a Soarer unless is reasonably new and therefore expensive.
At the end of the day Soarers rule! - Just know one knows it as they think Toyota? It must not be that great! Lol
However every ones got their own opinion to what cars they like.

Nicley put. Unfortunately some people disagree quite vocally, eg mum. The car is too low, loud, hard to get in/out of, etc. Funilly enough, her favourite car (opinion after driving one) is a 911, go figure?
I think that it is a big conspiracy. There are obviously underground sleeper cells operating in every major city with the sole purpose of discrediting soarers. Must be those damn durkaskylinestani's and their milo tins of mass destruction.

One thing that really gets up my goat is how people purposly badmouth cars.
Sure, you may not like it, but dont proclaim its the scum of the earth because its likely other people like it and will dislike you for your ignorant crap.
That really goes for everything in life actually. I dont like saying things are unless i know of people's opinions on the matter first, you could make an enemy =P
That said though, Soarers have alot in them.. and he is right in saying that lots go wrong with them, because they have more in them =P (GADDDGGEETTTSS!!)
What is astounding is that everything in Soarers holds together so well. The build quality of all things Toyota is lightyears beyond everything else... cept when you have a car that seems to always break the rules... damn crappy toyota gearboxes >.>
Hi everyone. For my first post I thought I'd weigh in on this topic. Sometimes the worst people putting the hate on are the local Toyota dealers (well, my local anyway) which is a shame. I personally bought my Soarer specifically FOR its gadgets. People laughed at me when I told them I was getting a Soarer (or rolled their eyes). I'm used to that though, my other car is a Hilux Surf!

Too right. Everyone should just listen to their grandparents "if you haven't got anything nice to say..." Then Callum's goat won't get pestered so much!
Welcome to our lovely home Anthony, where soarerites can take refuge from the perils that plague us, skylines, cops, wrx's, petrol prices and the like.
I'm feeling rather philosophical tonight, maybe its the socrates in me coming out, or maybe its just the booze?

There was one bloke at the UNI who is an absolute genius with things mechanical and had just built himself a very nice Cobra with a Mustang BOSS 302 engine in it. Unlike many home built kit cars this one has everything and it all works; climate control, decent stereo/video system, totally fantastic interior trim and leather seats, Brembo brakes and Supra 6 speed. He drove my car once after trying to keep up with me on the way home one day.....the Cobra now has a full Bullet supercharged 1UZ in it that just happened to be for sale on ebay that night. Some people can and do learn, just have to be exposed to the right gear. Now that I've driven it I want 6 speed and Autronic management!

The Auto-trimmer next door to work here has a early '90's SL 500 Merc - but he's the first to admit that the interior build quality and equipment just isnt as good as my Soarer, as he's had to re-cover the seats etc.

A mate of mine has just sold a nice supercharged V8 Soarer in favour of a 500 series 1982 Merc. At least he plans on ditching the 5litre mechanically injected Merc motor for a Soarer V8. The Merc interior is even better finished than the Soarer. I especially like the power rear quarter windows and retracting seat belt anchor points.

There is no doubt they have some cool gadgetry but the trimmer says merc interiors after the early 70's are not what you'd expect. My sisters 230 coupe is certainly falling to bits inside, but then it is 28 years old and has done 230,000k's so I guess you can't expect too much.
Don Bagnall Moderator New Zealand I have LESS Soarers than Hayden :-(

I've always had a soft spot (The brain!) for the 70's Mercedes 350SL & 450SL. And they're quite affordable, as they were never regarded as one of the classics like the Pagoda top 280SL's.

Not relating to soarers but quick cars in general. Some guy I was talking to was asking me how fast my car is. I said it has run a 13.7 ¼ mile with quite a few issues to sort. He was instantly telling me how the Ford GTHO did 12 second quarter miles stock blah blah blah. Did a bit of research and apparently they actually run a 14.4. Quick for its day but a LONG way off a 12. Some people just like to hang on other people and these people are usually the ones that know absolutely SFA about anything car related. Told him to come back to me with a timeslip of his car that has run a 12 and then I may listen to you

I bumped into an old high school mate a few weeks ago in a club and he proudly told me that he had just bought himself an EA Falcon wagon. I politely said "Oh nice... good on ya".
Later he asked what I am driving and I said "A Soarer" and he nodded his head and replied "You know they're a hunk-of-junk, right?".
I said "".
He then said "They look like a squashed turtle".
I said, "Mate, it's the newer shape one, not the old school ..."
"Said to be one of the nicest looking cars ever engineered ..."
"TT putting out 210rwkw ..."
Anyway, he did this "" and I did this "EA Falcon? "
"Hunk-of-junk" ?
Then he says to me "It'd be good to catch up again sometime. I miss you high school buddies".
If I ever see him in his EA Falcon, I'll be pulling up and doing a 100-point comparison on the two cars

I would just say that I am very happy for the owner of that car. That should put a stop to his crap.

And I suppose he does know? If he ever driven one he would never say that. It just shows he is an ignorant prick. It's like my friend with his '02 Beemer 330ci, told him I'm buying mine he was also saying, oh they're slow as, they sh|t, ugly and old etc etc. Ok I guess can't argue the ugly bit if that is his subjective opinion. Anyway, when I finally did get the car and met up with him, I took him for a drive and got him to drive it, he was more than impressed. He couldnt believe a car ten years older than his and worth one fifth of his was just as well made as his, in the same condition, and with equal performance to his, and just as comfy as his. Basically he took back what he said. He won't be changing to a Soarer though, he loves his Beemers, but sometimes you just gotta prove them wrong, it realy ain't that hard in a Soarer.

Blah, 3 series BMW's are common as and just as boring. Hell even the M series are just dull, dull, saloon looking cars. Like you said though, its subjective.
One of my ex's had a '96 2 320 2 door with leather (this is going back about 3 years) - only done 120,000k's and leather was falling to bits, interior door handles falling apart etc. Also I couldnt believe it was a 2 litre, I've driven peppier 1500CC Corollas! She drove my UZZ30 a couple of times and was amazed at how fast and smooth it was - and it was 5 years older than her BMW. Last time I spoke to her she had bought a 2000 SLK Merc.
Yeah, the 330ci though is the two door model right under the M3 with a 180 kW engine (same as the M3 engine except detuned) and 1300 or so kilos as opposed to the one and a half tonne for the soarer. When I raced him, our cars were very much in line next to each other, minimal differences in performance, apart from the turbo lag wich gave him a slight advantage so he was alittle bit up front always. Quality is not too bad, although the little knob on his factory TV broke off...
