Never touched the ECT PWR switch until I looked it up here and decided to give it a go. What a difference! It is like she has had a shot of adrenilin...response is dramatically better, handling is improved and the BOV has a whole new fantastic sound. Haven't been able to wipe the smile off my face :-)

All it does is keep the torque converter unlocked practically all the time (it has a mechanical lockup which aids in fuel economy), which makes your revs flare more. You'll notice a hit in your fuel economy.

If that's the case, then you would take a 5% power loss too, apparently having the torque converter unlocked costs you 5-7% power in 2nd/3rd & 4th gears, it requires that much engine power to remain unlocked. That's what I read anyways.

All I noticed with the car in PWR mode was that it was more willing to change DOWN gears when you sunk your boot in, and when driving along at 30-50% throttle it's more inclined to hold onto gears a bit longer before shifting up.

Yes you take a power loss, but you gain perceived power initially cause its more responsive. There was a really nice dyno graph posted on performance forums showing what happens when you lock and unlock a stall converter on an a340e to the power curve, be it a modified one.

Brand new clutch in that.

Torque lockup is known to kill transmissions; speak to a tranny guru! ;D
OverDrive does the same thing.

Dont worry, i havent heard of too many issues with the Toyota varients ;)
When my gearbox drank all my money it was second (potentially clutch packs) that dropped.

Yes, it does kill transmissions but from what I can gather, it will only affect the transmission on WOT gear changes from 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th.

How often do people on here shift HARD 2nd-3rd @ 130kph? I only ever get that fast down the strip, which is only 10-15 runs per year.

Nothing to worry about in my opinion.

*Shrugs*
I havent heard of a torque converter going on a Toyota gearbox before; other things tend to give out first.

The other thing it does is it holds 2nd gear when manually selected when you stop and then take off. With ECT/PWR off it will automatically change to 1st when stopped then back up to 2nd.

So have it ON if you want to force your car to take off in 2nd (when manually selecting 2nd)...Useful if you are in the snow (!) or if you have a shift kit and don't want to be jolted between 1st and 2nd in peak hour traffic...

I find the power button does make quite a difference. Revs hold longer and also drops down a gear faster. Quite satisfying but not as fun as the l and 2 gears are for engine braking etc.

Still I despise the lazy gear changes, how the computer drops the torque to make it smoother, its a waste of power there - looks like a shift kit will be on the list for next year :-)

A shift kit is fitted on mine, I don't know if that, combined with pwr switch on, makes an even bigger difference than with no shift kit and pwr on (make sense?). So far, the fuel I go through each day has not increased since having it on, generally I use 4 litres each day to and from work.

Mike. But it in Power ON mode. Hold shifter in 1st gear, Shift into 2nd. Back off throttle and hit the gas again. Like a manual shift. Needs to be timed right, but can shift quicker, lol.

Well, since this has been brought to my attention I have been driving to work with ECT in "Normal" mode and seem to be using 3.0 litres of fuel to work, whereas I would usually get no better than 3.2 litres in "Power" mode.

Normally the first thing I do when I get in an automatic car is look for the power/economy button and make sure it's switched to power.

My Subaru Liberty had a power/economy button. I left it on "power" simply because I found the constantly illuminated green "economy" warning in the dash annoying at night. In "power" it acted like "economy" until you put your put down, then changed to the "power" mode, and the power light would come on only in this mode. After things had settled down the orange power light would go out. Seemed like a good system.

Yes Don... Thats quite true, I find it much nicer to have the jump from a much higher gear (4) to a nice low one (1) rather than (3)-(1). Far more exciting to say the least!
