Mine is pretty rough, but it works - just used some cheap craft plastic sheeting from a stationary shop and some scrivits from Supercheap.

I was about to take out the air box to install a new pod filter but this thing was connected to it. What dose this AFM or intake temp sensor do? Can i install the pod filter and just leave the thing hanging or do i drill a hole into the filter pipe and stick it in there or what?

HELP PLEASE!!!

It looks exactly like the intake temp sensor I used to have, just unplug it mate and do your BFI.

havent noticed this in my car, although i had one in my 2000 celica. its a air temp sensor. best to put it back after you do the bfi i reckon.

He's not doing a BFI, he's putting in a pod.

Michael, I'd suggest you don't put the pod filter in unless you are planning to make an enclosure for it. Instead do a BFI, much cheaper, will give much better results than an open pod, and you can retain the temp probe so you know your ECU will still be getting all the relevant info it needs without any extra mucking around.

Ok i did the BFI it sounds great but the car seems a bit slower for some reason. It struggles to get over 4000rpm!!! Any reason for this?

Hmmmmm that sound like a really odd problem, maybe a vacuum line not attached, a split in the intake pipe or something?

Every car Ive done a BFI too (That being 7 of them) they have all responded well being a touch quicker.

Had a chance to do the BFI3 yet Mike? I've done no.1 but I must admit no.3 looks so good. Don't know about the whole stock hole staying though, that thing is a joke.

dont want to hijack but have any of you guys noticed a huge increase in engine noise (intake noise?) after doing a bfi? i did a bfi in my last soarer and am reluctant to do it again for this reason.

Thats because its sucking in twice as much air, and has nothing to muffle the noise.

#3 does look good indeed, but finding those cups would be hard, and knowing NZ, if there was a shop selling them they would probably be ultra expensive 'designer' ones.

I havn't actually got around doing this, I think its too much mucking about for little gain, the differences are minuscule really....

I'm set on the basic #1 style - easy and is the most logical.

Thats why I put in the sink strainers - cut the intake noise back to near stock, but still had the extra kick I wanted.

OK I have started my BFI mod and taken out the snorkel and cut a hole in the airbox.

Went to visit clarke rubber for some foam (I picked some offcuts, they are the squishy foam about 5mm thick). Would it be enough to shove that foam between the engine bay and airbox and then make a cover?

The NA soarer doesnt have much stuff below the headlight so I dont think Ill have to block it off

Also, the clarke rubber guy said that engine fumes may destroy the foam.Is it still OK to use then?

Also, wont the foam expand due to heat?

I dont know about expanding but it will most likely melt away.

Avoid rubber, use high temp plastic if you like.

Clark rubber sell a heat-resistant sound deadener which is silvered on one side and sticky on the other. This stuff is perfect for:
  • Adapting to wherever you need to stick it to seal off the chamber.
  • Muffling intake noise.
  • Protecting the intake chamber from heat.
  • Not falling apart in use.

I found some EVA foam from an old kickboard I used to have for swimming when I was small. I have just used that instead.

Its not really the extra air flow that creates the noise (as it would not be that much more) but the overall diameter of the intake

Factory ones are small because it reduces intake noise, making the resonant frequency higher and less noticable than a larger intake

If you use aluminium, you are creating a hot box. If you like the rigidity, at least surface it with the 5mm silvered foam I mentioned earlier. That also takes care of noise.

That pod filter setup looks like something you would find from a 1, 2, 3 Dollar store....

I just completed step 1 of the BFI. Pretty rough job and I haven't sectioned it off yet but already I can notice an improvement in response and high end power. Also noise from the intake and bov is a lot louder.

I also removed the bit behind the air filter that I think is there to restrict intake noise. Before.

It's hard to tell what's going on in this picture but if you've had your airbox out you'll understand. Luckily for me the previous owner had already removed the intake snorkel so it was a breeze to get out but I was trying to remove my headlight by following the tutorial but I found my cooler and piping was in the way. Does anyone know an easy way of removing the headlight in a tt?

There is no 'easy-way'. If its the stock piping you should be able to reach the headlight bolts with an extension peice.

A lot of the aftermarket piping kits have to be partially removed though as they are too big to fit around.

Yeah, I have the stock intercooler and it's a nightmare to get to the two nuts under the headlight. Might wait till I put my cooler in. The airbox in the tutorial above is very different to mine.
